The Halloween event in Pokémon GO is in full swing and MeinMMO editor Noah Struthoff has fallen in love with the AR game again. After months of absence, he has now returned.
This is the Halloween event: It will be spooky in Pokémon GO until November 4th! Ghosts appear everywhere and candy bonuses complete the experience.
I’m not really a fan of horror, but Halloween has always been my favorite time in Pokémon GO. In recent years, there have always been strong events, and this year Niantic was able to convince me again.
While I had rather taken a break in recent months and only sporadically played Pokémon GO, I am now active again and diligently walk through the dark alleys of my city after work – if it’s horror, then let’s do it right.
Halloween impresses me in Pokémon GO – Why?
This is what makes the event so good: Halloween has always been special in Pokémon GO. Ghost Pokémon are generally rather rare in the game and mostly appear at night. However, during Halloween, they are always around, and I catch Pokémon that I usually see very rarely throughout the year.
Additionally, there is the candy bonus, which is really worth it for me. Since the GO Fest 2020, I have been rather sporadic about organizing my Pokémon box, and now I can send off some things where double candy is beneficial.
The spawns are also convincing in quality. I keep finding a Litwick, whose evolution is among the best attackers of type Ghost and Fire.
In conclusion, I find the legendary raid boss well done, even though he isn’t really new. With Darkrai, there’s the best attacker of type Dark and hopefully also in shiny form. I have invested some raid passes already.
This is what makes Halloween always special for me: Regardless of the numerous bonuses, it is also simply the nostalgia factor that makes the Halloween season particularly special for me.
In 2016, Halloween was the first event that ever took place in Pokémon GO. Those are for me, among other things, the most beautiful memories I have of Pokémon GO.
It was almost clear to me that I would return to Pokémon GO when Halloween started this year. Nevertheless, I am surprised that the desire hit me so much right away.
Why did I even take a break? It was mainly due to the decisions that Pokémon GO made. In my eyes, too much has simply been repeated in Pokémon GO over the past few months, especially things I didn’t find so great, such as the Community Day with Charmander.
When new features came, they were rather disappointing. The Mega Raids are, in my opinion, wasted money. I have to do raids and then temporarily get a good Pokémon – no thanks, it just doesn’t appeal to me. The 12 km eggs bring my favorite Pokémon, but they are extremely rare there. That has also ruined my mood.
What I miss this Halloween: At first glance, this year’s Halloween event is a copy of previous years. The bonuses are the same and the spawns haven’t changed much. Nonetheless, the event has always been very strong and felt new because you hardly see the ghosts otherwise. Therefore, the “copy” from last year is enough for me here.
Nevertheless, there are a few points that could have made this year’s Halloween event even better:
- A completely new raid boss – there would have been several candidates for that
- New Pokémon, like for example, the ghosts from Gen 6 – instead, there was only Galarian Yamask as the new Pokémon
- A new shiny that can also be hunted in the wild – While there was a new shiny with Chandelure, it was only available through quests
What will happen next for me? The desire for Pokémon GO is definitely back with the Halloween event. Now, Pokémon GO has to show that they can also deliver strong events in the future that can convince me.
I will definitely remain active after Halloween as well and hope that no future events or features will dampen my mood.
Finally, Niantic announced a new event after Halloween:
