In the current earnings call, Take-Two discussed the success of Red Dead Redemption 2. Red Dead Online is said to be more successful than GTA Online at the same time. However, they left an explanation open.
This is what Take-Two says: In the last earnings call, a regular financial report, Take-Two also discussed the cowboy adventure Red Dead Redemption 2. CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that the title has now sold 24 million copies worldwide. Red Dead Redemption 2 also managed to sell 17 million units within eight days after launch and reached 23 million copies sold by the end of December 2018.
Furthermore, Zelnick stated that the online mode of RDR2, Red Dead Online, is more successful than GTA 5 Online during the same period. However, they left it open as to how the publisher measures this success.
Why more successful? It is not clear whether the publisher is referring to the overall player numbers or the revenue of the online mode.
Red Dead Online was often criticized during the beta by players for its economy and many griefers. Items such as weapons or clothing were usually overpriced in RDO and the ways to earn enough money were few or involved much grind.
There were also complaints about griefers who attacked, tied up, or killed other mostly peaceful players.
The thesis is presented on Reddit that RDO is more successful than GTA Online because GTAO struggled with severe server problems at launch. At that time, Red Dead Online was already more stable.
These changes are coming to RDO: Red Dead Online has now left the beta phase and recently received a huge spring update.
