Star Wars: The Old Republic is shrinking the number of its servers. This means that some players may lose their character names.
Big changes are coming for the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic. The Lead Producer stated that they want to find new ways to bring even more players together. This will primarily happen through server mergers.
The number of servers in SWTOR will shrink from 17 to 5, but these servers are expected to be significantly improved. Investments have been made in both new hardware and new software to enable the most stable servers ever.
For German players, this means that the servers T3-M4, Vajervalis Chain, and Jar’Kai Sword will become a new server: Tulak Hord (Europe – German)
The merging under the name of the “United Forces Campaign” will take place in several steps.
- October 10: Game Update 5.5 – Minor improvements to game comfort and fundamental system changes for upcoming patches.
- October 24: The hardware and software of the existing servers will be replaced.
- November 8: The 5 new, major servers will launch, and all players will move there.
What happens with duplicate names?
If, during the server merger, characters have the same name, there is a clear hierarchy regarding who may keep their character name and who must choose a new one.
- Premium accounts (subscription) have priority over Free2Play and preferred players
- Characters with more playtime have priority over characters with less playtime
Moreover, BioWare will ensure that “account corpses” will have minimal impact. All characters that have not been played in the past 90 days prior to the update will be automatically flagged for renaming.
If a player has multiple legacy names because they are active on multiple servers, all characters will adopt the legacy of the server with the highest legacy level.
Cortyn says: In the comments, many players lament that this is quite a long blog post just to announce that slowly there are too few players and the servers must be merged. And I have to honestly admit that it all sounds a bit too positive. But it remains to be seen how SWTOR develops. Many fans are slowly yearning for a larger story expansion – perhaps it will be announced soon.
The last major update had just expanded SWTOR with moving houses – a strange “property”.
