In Subnautica, you crash on an alien planet and have to explore the underwater world. Many creatures swim in front of you, some are peaceful, but others can end your life with a single bite. Many of these creatures seem to be based on a “template“ from our world. Here, we present 8 of them.
In anticipation of the upcoming launch of Subnautica 2 on May 14, 2026, on Steam, we asked ourselves: What do the “real“ creatures of Subnautica look like?
For this reason, we have selected 8 creatures for a small image series that seem to have a counterpart in our world. While many crazy alien fish and sea creatures swim in Subnautica, some look even creepier in real life.
We start with one of the most dangerous hunters in the game, the Reaper Leviathan.
Reaper Leviathan

The Reaper Leviathan is one of the most dangerous opponents in Subnautica. It grows up to 55 meters in length and is known for its roar, which you can usually hear before the creature even appears.
Its counterpart seems to be the oarfish. Especially the elongated shape and color pattern are very similar. The oarfish can reach up to 15 meters in length and normally lives at a depth of about 1,000 meters. It is harmless to humans and is rarely washed ashore.
It is also seen as an omen and is said to be the origin of legends about giant sea serpents (stuttgarter-zeitung.de).
