In a video, the developers of the upcoming 2023 survival MMO Nightingale talk about dedicated servers and why they are important.
What is Nightingale? Nightingale (PC) is an upcoming PvE survival game by Inflexion Games that can be played solo or in co-op.
Nightingale is primarily characterized by its setting: A Victorian fantasy world mixed with elements of industrialized England, as well as fairies and monsters.
The gameplay focus in Nightingale is on exploration, crafting, and communal building. Your goal is to explore a new world and build a life there. Your old world will soon be destroyed by a magical storm.
Surviving in the new world, however, is not without its dangers, as new threats loom everywhere.
What are dedicated servers? In video games, a dedicated server is a server provided by the developer within a game. Players can join such a server individually and independently of other players or their connections.
Alternatively, there are so-called peer-to-peer connections, in which one player acts as the host of the session. In this case, the data traffic runs through this player, which means the connection depends on this player. This can lead to lags and disconnections, which is why dedicated servers in Call of Duty are even considered “the holy grail of shooters.”
Why are dedicated servers so important to developers? In a video on YouTube, Steph Herdman, the community manager of Nightingale, talks about dedicated servers.
In the video, she says that dedicated servers have the advantage that players do not have to wait for a host when they want to play online. This is partly different in similar games. There, one player is the host of the multiplayer session, and the other players can only continue playing in the game world if this host is online.
However, with dedicated servers, players in Nightingale should be able to join the game world at any time and not depend on the presence of a host.
According to Herdman, dedicated servers are planned for the early access launch of Nightingale. This is part of the studio’s principle and is “fundamental”:
For Nightingale, we will have dedicated, official servers at the start of early access. This means that if you play with friends and invite them to your realm and set it as a rest point, each of you will be able to start this realm at any time, regardless of who is online.
