Today, on August 3, Baldur’s Gate 3 is being released at 5:00 PM. Apparently, many players want to start right at the launch. Now there are reports of problems with the servers.
What’s happening at the release?
- Since 5:00 PM, you can download and officially play Baldur’s Gate 3.
- However, the game is 122 GB large and there was no preload. Accordingly, the rush is now considerable.
- There are reports of issues with Steam and the download. However, these cannot be universally confirmed.
Are the Steam servers down? No, at least not for everyone. In our tests, we had access to the official Steam website in all cases, were able to log in, start games, and use downloads.
However, users on Reddit report that the download is exceptionally slow. The site allestörungen.de shows an increase in problem reports related to Steam since about 5:00 PM. According to this, affected are:
- Server connection
- Logging in
- Updates
Update at 6:50 PM: Especially slow download speeds are repeatedly reported as a problem. This indicates an issue with the servers. There is still no official statement from Steam. It’s best to use the time to update your graphics card driver.
Google search inquiries regarding server issues with Steam are also rising worldwide. Whether this is actually due to Baldur’s Gate 3 or another problem, we cannot say. A similar situation occurred with Sons of the Forest.
Since the problem does not occur for everyone, we recommend restarting the client if possible. Otherwise, keep trying; perhaps the current rush is simply causing overloads and timeouts.

Slow download? Baldur’s Gate 3 requires 122 GB
The problem with Baldur’s Gate 3 is that the game has an enormous size when downloading. Although there was an early access for years, the developers advised uninstalling both the early access and all save files. Otherwise, problems may occur.
However, since the game was still in early access status until the release, every owner or pre-orderer would have downloaded the old version. So everyone had to wait until 5:00 PM. The release was global, at the same time worldwide. According to the developers, the problem lay with Steam.
Due to the enormous size, however, many players, especially in Germany, probably won’t be able to play on the release day anyway – especially if they come home late.
We therefore recommend letting the download run overnight, including a driver update for Nvidia graphics cards. This way, you can casually play on Friday or over the weekend. It’s only frustrating for those who took vacation time for this.
