The Steam achievements of Baldur’s Gate 3 provide a certain overview of the choices made by the general player base, depending on how many percent of them have earned an achievement that can only be obtained through a specific situation. A player shares with the community his latest insight that seems to be quite depressing for him.
What turned out? The player showed on Reddit his latest find from the Steam achievements with a screenshot comparing two specific achievements:
- Mind Blown – Have a romance with the Emperor (12.8% of players have this achievement)
- Hot Date – Go on a date with Karlach (5.5% of players have this achievement)
“There are more people who slept with the Emperor than with Karlach… Let that sink in…,” writes the author VeRG1L_47 in his post. While some other players seem just as horrified, a majority of the comments, however, also offer a reason, or better said, an explanatory justification.

One character has lower demands than the other
Why did more players choose the Emperor over Karlach? In the comments below the Reddit post, some express why so many players (or even themselves) tend to pursue a romance with the Emperor rather than with Karlach.
The main reason seems to be that it is significantly easier to seduce the Emperor since he would only reject the player with extreme aversion: “I played most of my game with a friend (first playthrough) and didn’t talk enough with the characters to build a relationship. So when the Emperor was an option, I said yes,” comments Charming_Garbage_161.
Other players got involved out of curiosity about the thought experiment. “I was very curious if they actually make it possible to do it with an octopus,” shares Pukk.
But a rather important point has little to do with an aversion towards the tiefling, quite the contrary. Many players seem not to be good enough for the barbarian:
- “During my first playthrough, I simped for Karlach until the third act before I realized that I had somehow been friendzoned…,” writes spikedfromabove.
- “I mean, it makes sense. The Emperor will always make you an offer. Karlach has demands,” explains Riot_Inducer.
Why is the romance with Karlach not that easy? The comments indicate that the Emperor is the easier romance compared to Karlach. To engage in a romance with her, there are certain prerequisites and if these are not met, one will not be able to go on a date with her during the game and thus not attain the corresponding achievement.
When a player asked how to avoid messing up Karlach’s romance, another player responded with concise but quite precise help:
“Date only Karlach. Sleep only with Karlach. Talk a lot with her in Act 1. Gather as much infernal iron as possible and make sure to see the sexy blacksmith in every act (Act 3 optional). Otherwise, the dialogue options are quite obvious. Karlach is not subtle. Be direct. Say that you are into her and want to be with her.” – John_Wick
From this short guide, it seems that the romance with Karlach might not be as difficult as many portray it. Of course, it requires more commitment throughout the game compared to the Emperor, but with Karlach, it is easy to see how one stands with her.
