The developers of Project: Gorgon announced only a few days ago that the MMORPG is facing cancellation. While they did not want to shut down the game, they intended to suspend development. However, the community has donated money and taken out more subscriptions to save the game.
What was the situation so far? On November 11, the developers revealed that the future of Project: Gorgon looks grim. They ran out of money, and therefore they only wanted to focus on bug fixes for now. Larger updates are not financially feasible.
The goal was actually to reconsider how and whether the MMORPG could be saved in early 2024.
What has changed now? As the developers revealed on Discord, fans have donated over $20,000 directly to the studio. On top of that come new subscription and game purchases. The head, Eric Heimburg, says:
The first big question is: How can we use your donations to continue development in the best possible way? All of this will, of course, go into the development of the game – that is the point. But we are not yet sure how we can use it most effectively. We will need to think about this. We will keep our current development plans for the holidays while we examine what we can afford next year.
What is certain is that for now things will continue: “It is now possible to bring back some of the team members to work on the next updates – updates that we didn’t even know if they would be possible at all.”
A hidden gem on Steam with 84% positive reviews
Can we see the positive momentum already? Yes. On Steam, player numbers have risen significantly again. On November 14, 259 people logged in simultaneously at peak. That was the best number since August. In the meantime, the game had dipped below 160 players.
In addition, since the announcement, there have been 12 positive and only one negative review. This corresponds to a score of 93% positive ratings. This surpasses the 84% that the title has overall. With that, it belongs to the 10 MMORPGs with the best rating on Steam.
What kind of game is Project Gorgon? The indie MMORPG wants to transport you back to the times of EverQuest 1 and Asheron’s Call. There are no predefined classes, and the combat system relies on classic tab-targeting.
In addition, the MMORPG places a lot of value on exploring the world and ensuring that you discover things for yourself. It offers:
- Various PvE content such as quests and boss monsters
- Housing
- Open trade with your own shop
- NPCs should recognize you, and you can make them your friend or foe
- Currently, there is no PvP, and if it comes, then not in the open world.
