The number of players on the Steam platform has been growing over the years. On October 10, 2022, Steam reached a new record for player numbers. There were not even that many users at the start of the Corona pandemic. Currently, two well-known MMOs are ranked 1 and likely contributing to Steam’s success.
Steam, the gaming platform of Valve, launched in 2003. Since then, Steam has continued to grow, and users can now access numerous game titles from various developers and publishers through the website.
But not only has the number of available games grown over the years, but also the number of users on the platform.
On October 23, 2022, Steam reached a new record for player numbers. Two well-known shooter MMOs occupy the top spots in terms of bestsellers and the most played title, and they could be contributing to the current success on Steam with their player base.

What player numbers has Steam reached? The website steamdb allows tracking of the user numbers on the gaming platform:
A record exists in the value of the 24-hour peak. This currently shows the highest number of players ever logged in to Steam simultaneously. That was a total of 30,032,005 people, around 30 million individuals (via. steamdb.info, as of October 24, 2022).

The steady growth of simultaneously logged-in players over the years is clearly recognizable in another graph on steamdb.
Since the launch of the platform in 2003, the community has continued to grow, reaching significant milestones over time: In August 2015, Steam broke the 10 million mark; in March 2020, it then reached 20 million users. Now, in October 2022, 30 million have been reached.
How high were the numbers during the Corona pandemic? There was a massive peak during the week when the WHO classified Covid-19 as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Here, the number jumped from around 20 million logged-in users to almost 24 million.
Which games are currently “bestsellers” and “most played” on Steam? In the Steam ranking, two shooters currently occupy the top spots on the lists.
The top-selling title is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the latest installment of the well-known shooter series, whose campaign you can already play.
The most played title is currently Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, also a shooter with multiplayer mode. At the time this article was written, there were about 592,410 players in CS:GO.
How many people actually played this? The roughly 30 million users were logged into the platform; however, not all of them were actually playing a game. For this, steamdb.info provides further information:
The in-game number is significantly lower than the number of logged-in players and was around 8.5 million users.
