On reddit, the user Allgirlsarethesame explains in his post titled DO NOT SHOOT THE BIRDS ON RUTHERFORD III that you should not shoot at the birds. He himself explains that he shot at a level-1 bird and suddenly the battle music started.

• According to the player, new birds appeared after the shot at level 60 and higher, which suddenly attacked him.
• Although he was able to scare off the birds after a few kills, he never wants to make that mistake again: They poisoned me, made me bleed internally. Never again.

For those thinking of using the birds as a farm spot for experience considering their leveling, it should be noted that according to the comments, it is not an efficient farming method. As user SykoManiax explains, farming the birds is not worth it because you would kill them too slowly, and thus the XP would not pay off.
