Every good role-playing game needs a well-defined skill tree with countless options to choose the abilities of your character. Starfield is no exception. However, some skills seem more useful right at the start of the game than others. We show you the 5 skills that we find most useful at the beginning.
How are the skills divided?
- In Starfield there are 82 skills divided into 5 skill trees – Physical, Social, Combat, Research, and Technology.
- The individual skill trees are also divided into four levels. To unlock a new level, you must invest a certain number of points (4, 8, 12) in the respective category.
- The first level of a skill tree consists of 5 different skills each. Thus, you can choose from a total of 20 different skills right at the beginning of the game.
Some skills in Starfield are required to unlock basic abilities that make any role-playing fan’s heart race. And then there’s the jetpack, which is simply cool and fun.
Which 5 skills should you unlock?
- Persuade – Social, Level 1
- Increases your chance of convincing NPCs in dialogues of your views by 10 percent.
- Stealth – Physical Level 1
- Adds a stealth indicator to your HUD that shows you whether you are truly acting in secrecy.
- You are 25% harder to detect while sneaking.
- Silenced weapons do 5% more “sneak attack damage”.
- Thief – Social, Level 1
- Unlocks the ability to pickpocket NPCs.
- Security – Technology Level 1
- Improves your ability to hack, which corresponds to lockpicking (“digipicks”) in Starfield.
- Boost Pack Training – Technology Level 1
- Required for you to use your boost pack (the jetpack).
Are there any other useful skills? Yes! Depending on your play style and personal interests, you will discover additional skills that you find interesting. Take your time and get a sense of the different skills.
Three skills that we also find useful are “Targeting Systems”, “Body Training”, and “Suit Design” – the latter two can only be unlocked at level 2 of their respective skill trees.
The targeting systems (Technology Level 1) allow you to specifically attack and disable individual systems of an enemy spaceship. This adds a touch of strategy to the space battles.
Body training improves your maneuverability on alien worlds. In simple terms, it means you get a combat slide. With a skill point in suit design, you gain the ability to create better spacesuits and helmets.
