The real-time strategy legend StarCraft and the expansion Brood War are now available for free. Those who are not familiar with the games should act quickly.
A while ago, Blizzard announced that they would provide a remastered version of the popular strategy game StarCraft and the expansion StarCraft: Brood War. This remastered version is set to be released in the summer of this year, aiming to offer improved textures and a significantly increased pixel count, allowing younger players access to the origin of StarCraft or enabling older players to experience this strategy gem in a new light.
In preparation for the release of the new versions of StarCraft and Brood War, Blizzard has now made both original games available for free.

StarCraft deals with the origins of the three major races in the Koprulu sector of the galaxy. Humans have expanded widely, but repeatedly encounter a new threat in the fringe worlds: the Zerg. These adaptable aliens continuously mutate and adapt to their environment, driven by the mysterious Overmind to consume new targets “for the swarm”.
Together with the expansion Brood War, StarCraft tells the origin story of Jim Raynor, his rise and fall as a simple mercenary. Players also learn how Sarah Kerrigan evolved from a Ghost unit to the Queen of Blades and ultimately experienced her second birth as the feared “heroine” of the Zerg swarm. Oh – the strange Protoss are also involved and hold little regard for both humans and Zerg.
Will you download the original version of the game? Or would you rather wait for the summer and the price of the “remastered” version?
By offering the game for free, it seems that the dream of some community members, that the remastered version could be free for owners of the original, has died – as now basically everyone owns it.
