The developers of the upcoming online shooter Star Wars Battlefront 2 are aware of the criticism from players regarding the loot boxes and explain that it is not so easy to avoid accusations of pay-to-win.
During the open beta of Star Wars Battlefront 2, testers expressed strong criticism about how the loot boxes give advantages to those who spend money on the boxes. Therefore, the developers have already announced some changes.
Now, the developers have spoken again about the accusations and explain that they can indeed understand the players’ fear of pay-to-win.

Pay2Win is hard to avoid
Chris Matthews from Electronic Arts says: “There are games that exploit players and there are games that do a better job. Dice has paid close attention to how Star Cards work, giving players more options in battles. Things like “pay-to-win” are hard to avoid, but the developers are really doing a great job balancing the system. The voices from the community do not annoy us, as we love our fans. We are gamers ourselves and want to create something that everyone can enjoy – but we understand the concerns.”
Mitch Dyer, who worked on the campaign of Star Wars Battlefront 2, explains additionally: “That’s exactly what the beta is for. To see how players respond to the balancing, the maps, and the gameplay flow. What do players enjoy and what do they not? What works and what doesn’t? We use all this feedback to improve Star Wars Battlefront 2. This will become a game that exists solely because of player feedback. Couch co-op, a single-player campaign… none of that would exist without the players who have shown interest in it. Dice listens to the feedback.”

The loot box system is not finished yet
Dice states that the complete system with the loot boxes was not even included in the beta, as further fine-tuning is being conducted. Because although the Star Cards contribute to making you more powerful in the game, much more is needed to be really good in the game. We will find out how the system will eventually look on November 17 when Star Wars Battlefront 2 is released.
