The developers at Dice have commented on the criticism of the loot boxes in the online shooter Star Wars: Battlefront 2.
The loot boxes in Star Wars: Battlefront 2 contain not only cosmetic items but also Star Cards, crafting materials, and weapons. This was shown in the beta of the upcoming online shooter.
It is primarily the cards and crafting materials that many players find unfair, as they allow for the expansion of character abilities, enabling players to become better quicker by purchasing numerous loot boxes – and thus with acquired Star Cards and crafting resources. At least in the beta.
Without a high rank, there are no improvements to Star Cards
Now the developers have spoken out – they explain that the launch version of the loot boxes will not be as dramatic. The team lists this in detail:
- The contents of the loot boxes in the launch version of the online shooter include: weapons, mods, credits, Star Cards, emotes, outfits, and victory poses.
- To maintain balance, the most powerful items will not appear in loot boxes but can only be unlocked through in-game achievements.
- Loot boxes always contain a mix of Star Cards, outfits, emotes, or victory poses.
- Players can also receive the boxes as rewards by completing challenges and reaching certain milestones – however, it is still possible to purchase loot boxes with in-game credits or the premium currency “crystals”.
- If you receive a Star Card from a box that you already own, you will instead receive crafting materials with which you can improve a card of your choice.
- Moreover, you can only improve Star Cards or unlock new weapons if you have achieved a higher rank in the game. Therefore, you have to play a lot if you want to improve your cards.
In the release version, it is not possible to quickly improve your cards by purchasing loot boxes and then immediately using the crafting materials. You must first achieve a higher rank.
Developers will further adjust the system as needed
The developers assure fans that they are always keeping an eye on the balance and will make necessary changes if they find that things are unfair and not everyone is having fun with the game, whether they buy loot boxes or not.
How that will play out and whether Dice will need to make further adjustments will be seen on November 17, when Star Wars Battlefront 2 is released for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
With this statement and the changes, Dice addresses the criticism from players, who have previously seen the loot boxes in Star Wars Battlefront 2 as pay-to-win.
