Actor Chris Pine, the lead in the latest film on “Dungeons & Dragons” explains what makes the role-playing game so great. In his opinion, it should even be played in schools.
At the end of March 2023, the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was released, based on the well-known pen-and-paper role-playing game from 1974.
In it, Chris Pine, known to many as young Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek films, plays the role of ex-bard Edgin.
On the occasion of the film, the actor gave an interview on March 29, 2023, where he shared his own D&D experiences (via SlashFilm).

“I think this is probably the coolest thing I’ve experienced in a long time”
The actor shares that he is still quite new to the D&D area but has already encountered the role-playing game through a relative:
“My entry came through my nephew, who is a big player, and he has been playing with the same group of kids for six years, with the same Dungeon Master [game master in D&D]. He has written his own campaigns and drawn his own maps.”
Pine’s nephew guides the whole family through one of his self-written campaigns. The actor notices how accessible the game is for newcomers as well.
In his opinion, less the expertise matters, but rather the ability of the participants to act and improvise: “It’s said: ‘This is what it looks like. This is what you have. This is your obstacle. Now go.'”
This evening, the whole family has a lot of fun, and Pine recognizes a tremendous potential of the game for schools:
[…] Why I think it should be played in schools is because it immediately teaches teamwork. It trains the imagination. It’s fun, it’s improvisational.
And within minutes, everyone is on the same page. There is no argument about whether you’re cool or not. You’re arguing about whether you should have climbed over the rock to kill the dragon or not […].

The actor adds that the game night of the ancient role-playing game was an absolute highlight for him: “I think this is probably the coolest thing I’ve experienced in a long time.”
