The PS5 is significantly more expensive in the USA. Sony has announced this. But will the steep price increase also come to Germany and Europe?
In an official blog post, Sony announced that it will raise the prices for the PS5 in the USA, effective August 21, 2025.
How significant are the price changes in the USA?
- The standard PS5 (with disc drive) now costs $550 instead of the previous $500.
- The digital edition costs $500 instead of the previous $450.
- The PS5 Pro now costs $750 instead of $700.
Each console will therefore be $50 more expensive. The prices for accessories remain the same: Controllers and drives will not cost more. Previously, it was already not really worthwhile to buy a PS5 Pro in the USA and import it to Germany.
Sony attributed the price adjustments to economic challenges. The company explains in the statement:
Like many global companies, we continue to operate in a difficult economic environment.
For the time being, we are spared from the increased prices
Are higher prices coming our way? No, not for now. Sony states in the same statement, “We have no further price changes to announce for other markets.”
Therefore, prices will not increase for us at this time. The last price adjustment in Germany was not that long ago either.
When was the last price increase? In Europe and the UK, the last price increase for the PS5 was in April 2025. At that time, Sony announced in a blog post that prices were also increased by 50 euros, but the changes initially only affected the digital model: Instead of 449.99 euros, you now have to pay 499.99 euros. The disc drive, on the other hand, was even reduced from 120 euros to 80 euros.
Whether there will be further price increases in the future is unknown, but cannot be ruled out.
Since the release of the PS5 in November 2020, you can officially buy two different models of the PS5. Currently, you can buy the PS5 almost everywhere, and scalpers are left with their overpriced consoles. In August 2022, Sony raised the prices for the PS5, Disc and Digital Edition.
