Spider-Man will appear as a character exclusively on Sony’s PS4 and PS5 in Marvel’s Avengers. This has caused a lot of trouble in recent days. But it looks like this could just be the beginning. Sony is likely to pursue similar deals for other third-party games on the PS5.
Trouble surrounding Marvel’s Avengers and Sony exclusives: If you’re generally interested in video games, there’s a good chance you’ve heard about the recent troubles surrounding the new action game Marvel’s Avengers.
Because Marvel’s Avengers makes the iconic character Spider-Man exclusive to PS4 and PS5, generating a lot of criticism. And not just for a limited time – players on Xbox and PC seem to be left out permanently, which has even caused considerable discontent among PlayStation players.
However, as a well-known and respected gaming journalist and a supposed industry insider report, Spider-Man may just be the beginning of a series of potential exclusive deals from Sony.
Keep in mind that these are unverified information. So take it all with the necessary dose of skepticism and caution.
By the way, Marvel’s Avengers is getting even more exclusives for PS4 and PS5 – here they are
Sony is likely pursuing more exclusive deals for third-party games on the PS5
Where is the information coming from? The information comes among others from gaming journalist Imran Khan. He is the former senior editor at Game Informer and now co-hosts Kinda Funny Games on YouTube.
A supposed industry insider, who only identified himself as Matt, made similar comments on the discussion platform ResetEra.
This is what Khan says: Recently, Khan hinted in a video from the “Kinda Funny Games Daily” format that Sony has been working behind the scenes for a while to secure timed exclusive deals for a range of PlayStation 5 games.
All of this is said to further push the “PlayStation advantage,” which Sony began to market with the exclusive Spider-Man deal with Avengers. While Khan did not specify what kind of games these are or how many there are, he revealed that the magnitude of these deals is enormous and includes games considered to be multiplatform titles.
“You will be shocked at what things Sony wants to push through, for example, they are insisting on timed exclusivity.” Khan wouldn’t be surprised if Sony secures at least one more significant deal as big as Marvel’s Avengers, involving a mix of timed exclusivity and full exclusivity.
Even the supposed industry insider Matt said on ResetEra, where Khan’s video was discussed, among other things: “Yes, a whole lot is coming and the scope will be shocking.”
Following this, Khan also spoke up there, adding: “Yes, exactly what Matt says. There is not a major third-party publisher that Sony has not approached and asked what deals could be made. For some, it was about content, for others about games, and for others still about content and games.”
Khan also addressed the competition from Microsoft: “It’s not that Microsoft isn’t making offers. They just don’t want to pay the prices offered because Sony has already put some pretty high numbers on the table.
Finally, he stated: “This ‘PlayStation Advantage’ branding and ‘console exclusive’ are two terms that will be frequently used in the next few years.”
How likely is this? So far, all are unconfirmed statements. So we will have to wait and see if this actually confirms. However, a trend in this direction is already evident, so it is not completely unfounded.
Because besides Marvel’s Avengers, Sony has already managed to secure several exclusivity deals for its PS5 in one form or another. Highly anticipated third-party titles like Godfall, Bugsnax, or Ghostwire: Tokyo have already been confirmed as console or timed exclusive for PS5. However, there are also rumors about some yet-to-be-announced games like Final Fantasy 16 that they could be timed exclusive for PS5.
What do you think of such deals? Do they make the PlayStation 5 more attractive, or do they harm the gaming market? And if you want to take a look at Marvel’s Avengers before the release: Marvel’s Avengers: Beta starts – Here’s what’s included, here’s how to participate
