Sony unveiled the new wireless controller for the PlayStation 5 on Tuesday evening, presenting the final design in 3 images and showcasing its features. The gamepad for the PS5 will be named DualSense. The special features include haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a built-in microphone.
In a new blog post from Sony, they say that they are now sending the controllers for the PlayStation 5 in the final design to the developer studios. They want to share the controller with players now that they have reached this important milestone.
This is the idea behind the controller: The controller builds on the successful DualShock 4 of the PlayStation 4 from 2013, but is meant to be its evolution. The aim was to retain what players love about the DualShock while adding new functionalities.
The new features of the PS5 controller
These are the features of the controller: To offer players innovations and new features, Sony has added haptic feedback so players can feel when they drive a car through thick mud.
Additionally, there will be adaptive triggers on the L2 and R2 buttons. This is meant to give players the feeling they are actually pulling back a bow to shoot an arrow.
One design goal was for the PS5 controller to feel smaller than it looks. Sony also mentions a rechargeable battery. The battery issue stirred up discussions with the Xbox competitor.
Two of the features of the new PS5 controller are quite annoying. Can you guess which ones they are?
Raider is now Twix – from Share to Create
The new DualSense no longer has a “Share” button like the DualShock 4; it has been replaced by a new “Create” button. This is supposed to be the “new innovation,” as Sony says.
This can be understood as a symbolic reinterpretation:
- while in 2013 with the PS4, it was about sharing content
- now in 2020 with the PS5, the intent is for players to create content themselves
However, the button seems to also be fundamentally suitable for sharing content. Sony wants to share more details as the release of the PlayStation 5 approaches.
PS5 controller can temporarily replace headset
A special feature of the new controller: It will have a built-in microphone, allowing players to chat with their friends without using a headset. However, Sony recommends using a headset for longer conversations.
For the controller, Sony has deviated from the usual monochromatic scheme and switched to a two-tone design.
What is the price of the PS5 controller? Sony has not released any information about the price of the DualSense yet.
Wasn’t there a trailer for the PS5 controller? No, there has never been an official trailer. In the meantime, a trailer for the PS5 controller circulated on YouTube. However, it was not official or based on leaks; rather, an artist created the trailer according to his own ideas. The trailer was well-received, and many wished the controller would look like it did in the video.
What early testers said: Sony praised the haptic feedback of the new PS5 controller back in October 2019 when the first prototypes were circulating. The magazine Wired stated in an early test of the prototype that the haptic feedback of the controller was significantly better than the old rumble feedback.
