The Steam hit Sons of the Forest has received its first content update in Early Access. MeinMMO gathers some reactions and sees a satisfied community.
Sons of the Forest made a huge splash upon its release on Steam. For the first two hours, you couldn’t even buy the new survival hit because the Steam servers couldn’t handle the surge.
Now the first content update has arrived, here are some of the highlights:
- Mini-boss fight
- Binoculars and hang gliders
- Defensive wall gate
- Kelvin no longer cuts down treehouse trees
- New story elements

“Patch 1 – 10/10”
What are the reactions to the update? A look at the subreddit of Sons of the Forest quickly reveals that many players are very pleased with the update. There are hundreds of positive comments, such as that from user Neichin: “Patch 1 – 10/10” (via reddit.com).
This is also due to the fact that the developers did not raise expectations too high. Since the release, they have answered some questions about the future, but always made it clear: They are taking their time, wanting to make a cool game.
The comment from user Lampman28 symbolizes this (via reddit.com): “I only expected a few bug fixes, but this is a welcome surprise. They added much more than I expected in the first update. Good job, Endnight Games”.
Many users have their own highlights. User adam_nl celebrates that you can finally build treehouses, Mercy_CC is happy about the boss fight, am-345 is thrilled about the new wall gates (via reddit.com). And whoever has tried out the new glider is just flying for the time being:
Some negative voices criticize the heavy nerf of the shotgun. The powerful weapon lost half its damage, and some feel that the weakening is excessive. User Sors_Numine writes: “Argh, why did they nerf the shotgun so hard? […] It was my ultimate ‘disappear, I’m building here’ for cannibals”.
All in all, the update has been very well received by many players.
Is it worth checking back in? If you just finished a 20-hour run, it might be better to wait a few weeks before starting a new adventure. For a complete re-run, the changes are not comprehensive enough.
However, if you’re curious, you can experience the new content in an old save file. The mini-boss spawns in the corresponding bunker, and the new items can also be found. Find out here what else the developers have planned.
When will the next update come? Sons of the Forest plans to release a new content update every 2 or 4 weeks. You can already estimate whether it will be a larger or smaller update.
The current update came 2 weeks after release and is considered a small update. The next update will come on March 23 – again a 2-week patch.
Overall, Sons of the Forest is expected to remain in Early Access for 6 to 8 months. So quite a lot of new content is still coming our way by the end of 2023, as long as the developers maintain the content pace set by the first update. However, this still remains to be seen.
