Some things in World of Warcraft are hardly affordable. Like this mount – for which someone has now paid over 4,000 euros.
Even though most things in the great MMORPG World of Warcraft can be earned, there are a number of mounts, pets, and toys that can only be obtained through indirect means – like the use of real money. This time we are referring to a real rarity, not a mount for 20 euros from the shop.
What happened? A WoW mount was sold on the auction platform eBay for a quite hefty price. The buyer shelled out a whopping $4,900, which amounts to about 4,300 €! That was the steep price for a small piece of printed cardboard, as it is about the Spectral Tiger.
What kind of mount is this? The Spectral Tiger is basically modeled after a classic Night Elf saber, but with a special twist. The saber is actually transparent and thus has its “spectral” name. In World of Warcraft, it is already a rare sight due to its rarity, even though there are now other mounts with a similar look – but no variant of the Spectral Tiger.
Why is the mount so expensive? The reason for this is that the mount can only be obtained through physical trading cards from the aforementioned “World of Warcraft Trading Card Game”. However, the game was discontinued years ago, and new cards have not been printed for a long time.
In the Trading Card Game, there were so-called “loot cards” that had a small code printed on them. The code can be redeemed in World of Warcraft at an NPC, granting the respective loot.
In other words: All Spectral Tiger cards currently in circulation are probably the only ones that will ever exist. The card was already extremely rare back then, and each year the number of cards that are still unused in circulation decreases.
Whether the cards are purchased for personal use or if they will be resold later is unknown – however, such a rare card could also represent a solid investment.
Could you imagine ever spending so much money on a game card with an in-game mount? Or is that an astronomical sum that can never be worth it?
Almost a year ago, a pet also sold for a high price – for 3,000 €.
