According to Gossip, Nvidia is rumored to be re-releasing an old graphics card with more video memory. However, some users fear that Nvidia’s plans will not only bring benefits for gamers.
People currently looking to buy a graphics card for their PC either have to pay a lot of money or cannot get a GPU.
Now rumors claim that Nvidia plans to re-release an old graphics card to mitigate the shortage a bit. The talk is of the GeForce RTX 2060. Interested users might still be unable to buy an RTX-3000 graphics card, but at least there would be graphics cards available for gamers, and users wouldn’t have to pay thousands of euros for graphics cards on eBay, as the greed of scalpers is high.
How reliable is the source?: The rumors come from Videocardz, which, however, does not clarify exactly where the statements come from (via videocardz.com). The rumor that Nvidia is working on a refresh of its RTX 2060 is, however, not new.
Already, our colleagues from GameStar reported that Nvidia is said to be working on a new edition of the RTX 2060 (via GameStar.de)
Nvidia is said to be working on an improved RTX 2060
Nvidia is said to be working on: The RTX 2060 was released on January 7, 2019, and is Nvidia’s weakest RTX graphics card. This means that with the 2060 you can also use ray tracing and DLSS. This is not possible with the GTX graphics cards.
At release, you could buy the RTX 2060 with 6 GB of video memory. In response to AMD, Nvidia then released the RTX 2060 Super with 8 GB of VRAM.
This is set to change: Currently, it is said that the RTX 2060 is to be re-released with 12 GB of video memory. More performance should technically not be possible, as performance is clearly limited by the graphics chip.
However, it is strange that Nvidia is said to be working on an RTX 2060 and not on the Super variant. The Super variant offers a bit more performance and is based on the same chip as the regular RTX 2060.
If there are no remaining stocks of boards or graphics chips, such a decision would make little sense for both Nvidia and interested gamers.
RTX 2060 targets entry-level gaming
Who should buy such a graphics card? With the RTX 2060, the focus is primarily on individuals who want to play games mainly in Full HD or WQHD with reduced details.
According to Videocardz, Nvidia aims to offer an alternative to the poorly available RTX 3060. Currently, one pays at least 600 euros for an RTX 3060, which is about double the MSRP of 329 euros.
Especially for users who are looking for a graphics card and in the current situation are either not willing to spend hundreds of euros on a GPU or couldn’t buy a graphics card, an RTX 2060 could indeed be an alternative if the rumors are true.
Users fear that graphics cards will remain very expensive
In the community, there is now concern that the re-release of an old graphics card may not bode well for gamers.
For if Nvidia produces an old graphics card again and upgrades it, it is not a positive sign for the availability of current graphics cards. Many now fear that it could take several years before Nvidia’s GeForce graphics cards are reasonably available at decent prices.
At least Nvidia has already stated that graphics card prices will remain high in the future. This is partly due to the current supply issues, which affect not only graphics card manufacturers but also the next-gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X.
