Fortnite (PC, PS4, iOS & Xbox One) has the new mashup game mode “Infinity Gauntlet.” In it, you can become the supervillain Thanos from Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. We played the new mode and stared death in the face.
This is what happened: Out of the blue, the developers at Epic Games presented a new, limited-time mashup game mode called “Infinity Gauntlet”. In it, a player can pick up the Infinity Gauntlet and immediately become the powerful supervillain Thanos.
We have already tried the new mode. And one thing is certain: Infinity Gauntlet is a completely different Fortnite!
How does the new mashup mode work?
Basically, Infinity Gauntlet runs like a normal solo round in Fortnite. You land on the map and must be the last one standing. However, there are additional features:
- There are no weak, white weapons; instead, you will find more rare, epic, and legendary weapons
- Since the storm comes quickly and deals massive damage, a round lasts no longer than 15 minutes
- You receive double the resources when harvesting
- Launch pads and shield potions are found more frequently
These are Thanos’ abilities
But the most important innovation is Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet!
- The Gauntlet appears shortly after the game starts somewhere on the map
- You can always see it on the map as well as on the compass
- When a player picks up the Gauntlet, they become Thanos. He is also always visible, as are his current hit points and shield points.
- Thanos can smash everything to pieces with his punches, fire a strong, sustained energy beam, and jump extremely high. From the jump, he can come crashing down like a meteor and damage everything in the vicinity.
- Thanos cannot use items or build.
- He has
300200 shield points and700800 hit points. The shields are fully replenished whenever he gets a kill. However, the hit points cannot be regenerated. - When Thanos dies, he drops the Gauntlet. Whoever picks it up will become the new Thanos.
This is how Infinity Gauntlet plays
Right after the start of Infinity Gauntlet, I checked out the new mode. Early on, I realized: This is no longer normal Fortnite! It starts with the fact that – like in the past Blitz mode – there is hardly any time to comfortably gear up. The storm comes closer quickly and pushes players closer to the final zone.
In the safe zone lurks death! Because shortly after the game starts, the arrival of the Infinity Gauntlet is announced with ominous space sounds. Where the thing appears is random. From then on, all players run like crazy towards the Gauntlet to seize the power of Thanos.
Ideal for strategists! All players? Not all, as some sneaky individuals camp along the paths to the Gauntlet and take out too greedy players from behind. This happened to me when I blindly tried to cross a bridge towards the Gauntlet and was shot in the back by a teammate.
The horror in the safe zone!
Even if you are not treacherously slaughtered, the danger is tangible, as Thanos is rampaging somewhere on the map, preferably in the ever-shrinking safe zone. The Titan has roughly the hit points of ten players with shields, and after each kill, his shields are fully restored.
Update: Thanos was so strong that he has already been hit by the nerf hammer.
A worthy enemy! A poorly coordinated attack brings little, and the superficial damage caused by such an attack is quickly regenerated. Rather, only coordinated, strong attacks have a good chance. At the same time, you must prevent the Titan from escaping, as he can quickly get away with his mega jumps.
New tactics are necessary!
Fortifications are useless! Furthermore, the usual Fortnite tactics against Thanos are rarely effective. The otherwise strong fortifications, which protect you from fire, are smashed to pieces by the Titan with one blow. His meteor jump attack crushes entire fortresses like a house of cards!
Defeating Thanos with brains: Therefore, you must take Thanos into a crossfire strategically and lure him to places from where he cannot easily escape. At one time, the Titan was positioned under a bridge. When he tried to jump away, he hit the indestructible bridge and couldn’t escape. At another time, he landed awkwardly on a slope and helplessly slid down, taking a lot of bullets in the process.
The worst camper of all time! But woe to the players who encounter a clever Thanos. Once, the safe zone was on a high mountain. There, Thanos simply camped, and the players could only get up via ramps. As soon as someone tried this, Thanos came down from above and simply wiped out the attacker.
Together or against each other?
In a round of Infinity Gauntlet, players are generally indecisive. In a regular Fortnite round, an opponent is immediately shot as soon as you have a good shooting position. In Infinity Gauntlet, you tend to hesitate. Because Thanos will come eventually, and wouldn’t it be more sensible for a teammate to distract or even injure the Titan?
Wouldn’t it be better to defeat the villain together and then farm the injured players and maybe even retrieve the Gauntlet from the rubble? With this twist and the fast-paced action, Infinity Gauntlet is an extremely thrilling game mode that we hope will remain in the game for a long time.
Update: Thanos was so strong that he has already been hit by the nerf hammer.
