MeinMMO editor Dariusz is actually looking forward to the ONL of gamescom 2024. He expects exciting announcements.
On August 20, the Opening Night Live (ONL) of gamescom 2024 will start at 8:00 PM. The event is typically filled with a ton of trailers for new games or updates. Often, new games are presented to the world for the first time, or upcoming players receive new announcements.
For the first time in years, I, as a shooter expert, have the hope that there could be a major announcement for us as well – there are indeed hints. And if I’m wrong in my expectations, at least you’ll have something to laugh about and can say, “This fool actually had hope.”
The gamescom 2024 is also an important event for us. You can watch the ONL live stream with us from Webedia, that is, GameStar, GamePro, and MeinMMO. Stress tests, closed demonstrations, and more
My assumption that there must be at least one announcement is based on events of the past few weeks. Several promising games have opened their doors.
Spectre Divide, the upcoming tactical shooter from shroud, had a small stress test for the servers first, then shortly thereafter, a closed beta started. I believe we could soon learn about a release date, an open beta, or at least a release window. A stress test for the servers only makes sense if a large influx of players is expected soon.
In Diablo 4, there was the so-called server slam about a month before the game’s release. Although Spectre Divide was only recently presented, the developers have been working on the shooter for two years already.
Then there is Splitgate 2, which was also recently announced. Following the announcement, a video was released showing (ex) pros and content creators playing and presenting the classes of the shooter. Moreover, an alpha playtest on Steam is supposed to start on August 21, shortly after the ONL of gamescom 2024.
In the video with the pros, Splitgate 2 also looked like it was quite far along in development. As for the release, we only know the year: 2025. So maybe we will see a new trailer with more gameplay or even a more concrete release date.
Waiting for release dates and CoD Next
Thirdly, we talk about Delta Force: Hawk Ops. The shooter with the Battlefield modes is currently conducting an alpha test. Here, too, we are waiting for more precise information about the release. I would also quite like to see a gamescom trailer for the extraction shooter Beautiful Light – after all, the game is supposed to be released in 2024. The supposedly upcoming tactical shooter ALARA Prime, which is also set to be released in 2024, should also start ramping up marketing if the F2P title is indeed to be released this year.
And even if it should be clear: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is still in the works. On August 28, the big event CoD Next will take place, where they will once again present the upcoming installment in detail. It is therefore likely that there will be another trailer just before.
Little hope for PvE shooters
I currently have less hope for fans of PvE or single-player shooters. Ashfall, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, or the next Doom could show something. The same goes for the dino shooter Ferocious, which at least states on Steam “Planned release date: Upcoming announcement.” Maybe we will also see S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, which recently delayed its release again. However, I don’t have much hope for that.
On the other hand, I am quite sure that we will see a trailer for Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2. The co-op shooter has already started promoting itself weeks ago and is preparing for the release on September 9. I don’t see a big announcement coming for the Warhammer shooter, but I would still enjoy watching a new trailer.
Personally, I would be really happy about a release date or further beta phases for shroud’s tactical shooter Spectre Divide. I had and continue to have a lot of fun in the open beta.
