Pioneers of Pagonia will make many Settlers fans happy on Steam. A well-known and experienced developer who was involved with one of the pioneers of the Settlers series is also participating in this project. However, the game does not want to rest on its old virtues but aims to bring innovations to the genre.
What is Pioneers of Pagonia?
- Pioneers of Pagonia is a city-building simulation, in the spirit of the Settlers series.
- A new trailer shows first gameplay that raises hopes for an upcoming hit.
- You manage villages and their inhabitants, trying to optimize various production chains and further develop your village.
- According to Steam, the release is targeted for late 2023.
- Developer Volker Wertich, a true veteran of the genre, is involved. He worked on the first and third parts of the Settlers series.
- He was also involved in the latest part of the Settlers series, “The Settlers: New Alliances,” but left the studio in 2020 during development.
Currently, he and the studio Envision Entertainment are working on Pioneers of Pagonia. Hopefully, this German game project develops better than the disastrous release of another German studio.
Maurice Weber, perhaps the best-known German expert on city-building games, sees several signs that it will be better than the last disappointing part of the Settlers series.

Your people must make you happy
What does Pioneers of Pagonia offer? Unlike other genre representatives, you don’t have to make the villagers happy, but the other way around. As Volker Wertich says in an interview with PCGamer:

In our game, you do not have to make the [villagers] happy, but the people have to make you [the player] happy. That is the basic idea.
An interesting approach since many other city-building simulations rely on the mood of the villagers. The game also offers other features:

- Over 40 building types and more than 70 goods
- Online co-op
- Beautiful cel-shading graphics
You also have to fend off dangers in the form of bandits, wild animals, or mysterious mythical creatures like werewolves.

When will Pioneers of Pagonia be released? The city-building simulation does not have a concrete release date yet. The Steam page states the fourth quarter of 2023 as the release period.
