Skill-based Matchmaking (SBMM) is a highly debated topic in many shooters. With The Finals, a new hot title has just hit the market that many players are currently enjoying. However, one piece of information was uncertain until now: Is there SBMM in The Finals? We at MeinMMO asked the developers and received a clear answer.
Does The Finals have SBMM? Yes, The Finals has skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) in all modes.
As the developers revealed in the interview, however, the SBMM in The Finals is less strict than in other shooters.
So, we use skill-based matchmaking in all modes to try to provide players with a good experience. I would say that compared to other games, it’s perhaps a relatively relaxed SBMM.
Has anything changed about SBMM since the release? Yes, in hotfix 1.2.3, the SBMM was revised. The developers explained in the patch notes on their website that they had made the system somewhat tougher, meaning players would more often match with other players of the same skill level. As a result, players may now have to wait a little longer for a match in some cases, but they can look forward to more exciting games where all teams are supposed to be about equally good.

How exactly does the SBMM differ from other shooters? Embark Studios explained to us that the “chaos” of The Finals also plays an important role in skill-based matchmaking.
In The Finals, there are many other factors besides pure gunplay, meaning the SBMM does not need to be as precise as in games where aiming is more focused.
I think The Finals is a pretty chaotic game where a lot happens, and you have to react to many things happening in the moment. With many elements beyond gunplay that drive the gameplay – such as how you use your gadgets, your team play, those kinds of things.
Therefore, I think we are a game that – compared to a Counter-Strike or a Call of Duty, which are primarily focused on combat and aim – does not necessarily require a really, really refined SBMM that delivers incredibly tight games every time.
The developers compare the SBMM of The Finals more to that of various battle royale shooters or Overwatch, as there is also more chaos and not just a focus on aim.
Generally, the chaotic gameplay of The Finals allows for the SBMM not to be “mega refined” and “fine-tuned to the smallest detail.” Nonetheless, the team wants to ensure that you are playing matches where everyone has a chance to win.
How does SBMM differ between the various modes? There is SBMM in every mode of The Finals, but each mode assesses your skill independently of the other modes. Each mode has its own SBMM.
In the interview, the developers said:
We rate them [the different modes] as their own skill classes. We don’t simply transfer [between modes], just because the modes are too different. If someone excels in tournaments, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are just as good in the banked modes. Therefore, we try to take into account the skills of players in the various game modes they play.
This means that you may encounter differently skilled opponents in different modes – depending on how well you are doing in each respective mode.
