Rockstar wanted to make GTA 5 safer, now hackers are crippling their servers

Actually, Rockstar Games intended to make the servers more secure with anti-cheat software. However, the online services of GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption 2 are now suffering from outages due to DDoS attacks that are apparently being carried out in retaliation.

What kind of anti-cheat software is this? With the BattlEye anti-cheat software, Rockstar Games aimed to make it harder for cheaters in GTA Online to gain an advantage in the game. The software was introduced with update 1.69 on September 17, 2024.

GTA Online can no longer be started without the installation of the software, making it a must for players. The problem with BattlEye is that modders of the game are restricted by this software. For example, a modding community offers a mod that allows players to cheat.

Additionally, the anti-cheat system has excluded players who play on Linux. Due to these issues, the BattlEye software is controversial.

DDoS Attack Brings Servers Down

What kind of attack is this? Over the weekend, the online services of Rockstar Games suffered a DDoS attack. Botnets are flooding the authentication servers, rendering them inoperable, and players on both PC and console are affected by the consequences. There are connection problems and difficulties logging in.

Why are the servers being attacked? The group behind the attacks is allegedly protesting against the introduction of the BattlEye anti-cheat system. The consequences for players are said to be too radical, and hackers see the DDoS attack as a form of retaliation.
