GTA 6 will be one of the groundbreaking titles of the coming years for many players. Many fans are already looking forward to the new title from Rockstar Games and can hardly wait for the release. A former GTA developer says that things were different in the past.
What kind of stress is Rockstar under? GTA 5 has sold across multiple console generations and set new standards in the video game industry. Many players and experts therefore have high expectations for GTA 6.
In addition, there are many details that Rockstar has to deal with:
- A hacker leaked sensitive data about GTA 6. There was a massive leak featuring 90 videos with a total of 3 minutes of gameplay from GTA 6.
- GTA 6 is currently announced for 2025. But the executives are reportedly already visibly nervous because they fear that the release might be pushed back to 2026.
- Rockstar was inspired by a real person for one of the characters in the trailer. The tattooed man is demanding a large sum of money from those responsible.
- Even Twitch streamers like MontanaBlack have high expectations for GTA 6. If the game disappoints them, it would also affect their fans and likely the sales figures.
Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar developer who worked on several GTA titles, also believes that GTA 6 will be something special. He thinks that GTA 6 will sell over 10 years and have no competition. He is also the one who now reveals that the releases of the earlier GTA parts were very different.

Earlier releases of GTA were more relaxed
How was a release back then? Vermeij reminisced about the “good old days” and recalled the launch of GTA San Andreas, which took place about 20 years ago. Back then, releases were handled differently, and the stress subsided about 6 weeks before the actual launch.
The turning point, at which the stress lifted from the team, was the moment when the DVD was produced. This was approximately 6 weeks before the actual release.
From that point on, the developers could not influence much anymore, which is why they were much more relaxed at the launch than they would be today.
You can read his English tweet here:
According to him, most developers even took vacations during the release and thought about the next project. There were no Day-One patches, and players did not know much about the game because, aside from a few trailers, there was no information available.
According to Vermeij, leaks were hardly a problem back then. In contrast, GTA 6 is struggling with many data leaks, through which numerous pieces of information have already come to light. As a result, we already know more about the game than Rockstar would prefer.
