RuneScape Classic (January 4, 2001 – July 6, 2018)
What was RuneScape Classic? This classic MMORPG was one of the first games of the genre and had its heyday long before World of Warcraft and the like. RuneScape Classic was the original version of the game and originated from a browser game.
Why it failed: According to a statement from the developers, RuneScape Classic was no longer secure from bots and scripts. Due to outdated technology, they could no longer guarantee community protection and thus had to take the venerable game offline.
How long did the game last? RuneScape Classic is likely to go down in history as one of the oldest MMORPGs. The game started on January 4, 2001, and lived until July 6, 2018. Thus, it became over 17 years old!
This is what remains positively in memory: RuneScape was for many older fans of online role-playing games alongside Ultima Online and Everquest the entry into the MMORPG genre. As a result, the game has been mentioned several times in the Guinness Book of Records. It has already been mentioned there five times. You can still play the “newer” version of RuneScape; the shutdown only affects the original game.
