What kind of game was it? Scavengers was supposed to be the new showcase game for the technology “SpatialOS”. This technology was meant to revolutionize the MMO genre by allowing the shooter to send 9,000 players into a battle simultaneously. New world records could have been possible.
However, even at launch during Early Access, the “massive” aspect was abandoned. In the largest matches, only 60 players compete against each other in three different teams. The core principle resembles Fortnite or other Battle Royales, but instead of the last survivor winning, the team that scores the most points is declared the winner. Players could also complete numerous PvE challenges for points, including battles against heavy bosses.

What did it fail at? Scavengers couldn’t capture the masses. Right at the start of Early Access, only 16,000 people played at their peak on Steam. The numbers dropped quickly afterward. Improbable, the owner of Midwinter, sold the developer studio to another company. They then decided to shut down the shooter.
It died even before leaving Early Access.
What are the best memories? The idea of massive battles was probably the best that Scavengers had to offer. The game in Early Access, however, had little to do with that dream and felt more like generic Battle Royales.
Are there alternatives or successors? If you want to play a Battle Royale, you still have many options in 2022. The three biggest titles are Fortnite, PUBG, and Warzone 2. For a more colorful experience, you can also try Apex Legends.
