In the upcoming action game Red Dead Redemption 2, your time in the wilderness also affects your appearance. If you don’t change clothes and take care of yourself, you will become a disheveled forest hermit. Red Dead Redemption 2 is supposed to reflect hair growth, beard growth, and the dirtiness of your clothes.
In the Wild West, things were quite rough. Going to the barber was something extraordinary, but also quite necessary if you had been out in the prairie for weeks. It’s similar in Red Dead Redemption 2.

The protagonist’s appearance changes over time
Over time, protagonist Arthur Morgan will change significantly in the game, and you have an impact on how much:
- Your hair grows slowly in the game
- A beard will also grow over time
- You can visit the barber, who will give you a nice haircut
- You can shave
- You will not be able to go to the barber and have long hair or a full beard styled at once. Hair must grow before you can choose a new hairstyle
- Additionally, your clothing will get dirty over time (for example, when you ride through mud) and it can get holes (if you wear it for a long time), so you will need to keep an eye out for fresh clothes
This was confirmed by Rockstar North Co-President Rob Nelson in an interview with the French site Jeuxactu.

Quite detail-oriented
This system shows how detail-oriented the developers of RDR 2 are. So you need to pay attention to your appearance if you don’t want to ride around looking totally disheveled with tattered clothes, long hair, and a messy full beard.
The developers incorporate such systems into the game to create a believable world that is full of details and therefore feels “alive”. Whether NPCs react to your appearance is still unclear.
A similar system also exists in The Witcher 3. Witcher Geralt’s beard grows over time and it is possible to get new hairstyles at barbers.
