Red Dead Online had a mixed year in 2020. Developer Rockstar now talks about the future and reveals what is planned there.
This is the current state of RDO: The mood in Red Dead Online is mixed. Many players wish for major updates and innovations in the game from Rockstar. The first and last major update came in July and since then the game has somewhat stagnated. There was another smaller update with zombies for Halloween.
Only smaller adjustments have been made throughout the year. Players in RDO are currently enviously looking at the sister game GTA: Online. There, a new area and new missions are coming soon. Accordingly, there are already memes about it in the Red Dead Online subreddit:
Rockstar Talks About Future Plans
This has now been said: Developer Rockstar gave the magazine “gamesradar” an interview about Red Dead Online. There is also discussion about the future of the game. Tarek Hamad, Director of Design Production at Rockstar North, said:
The team is currently focused on building out the world of Red Dead Online. This world, this era, offers so much room for storytelling and the introduction of a wide range of different characters that can all be experienced alone or with a whole crew. It’s really important for us to ensure that every type of player can experience the stories we have to tell and control how they experience all of this in Red Dead Online.

So one can expect that Red Dead Online will introduce more characters in the coming year. However, it remains to be seen when this will happen.
What the developers have already revealed: Even before this interview, Rockstar revealed that the upcoming update is supposed to be much more action-oriented. They mentioned this in an interview with Gamestar.
So a new update is already in the pipeline. However, it is still unknown when exactly it will be released.
What does Rockstar say about the previous updates? In the interview, they do not address the criticism from players demanding more updates for Red Dead Online. They talk about their updates and want to enable players to have a kind of second life as a cowboy. They want RDO to be more realistic than GTAO and, above all, to score points with the players.
Tarek Hamad comments as follows:
With Red Dead Online, we try to convey every aspect of what it might be like to live in America in the late 1800s, so that players have a huge variety of options to create the experience they desire in this world. When approached this way, there is room for all kinds of players. Of course, the classic cowboy shootout elements are extremely popular. […]
At the same time, we see that a large part of the community enjoys some of the more solitary and quiet activities offered. […] The way all these different players interact truly paints a picture of what it would be like to live in this era.

This remains to be seen: Numerous players wish for more content and Rockstar wants to focus on realistic mechanics. It remains to be seen whether these two views can harmonize in the future and whether Rockstar can satisfy the players’ appetite for content.
In 2020, it was quite quiet in the game. For 2021, more characters and their stories have now been announced. This could mean more action again.
However, some players are not bored at all in Red Dead Redemption:
