Where do the numbers come from? The figures come from Sony’s quarterly report for January to March (via Sony.net). In the quarterly report, the company also released the total sales figures for the PlayStation 4.

How many consoles has Sony sold? Sony states in its financial report how many PS4 consoles were sold from January to March 2020:
- 1.5 million units of the PlayStation 4 were sold.
- In the same period in 2019, 2.6 million units were sold.
The 1.5 million units are still strong, and the decrease in numbers is not only due to the PS5: Due to the coronavirus crisis, people are currently less willing to spend money on new hardware.
The launch of the PS5 should not be delayed by the coronavirus, Sony explained.
What do the sales figures look like overall? The PlayStation 4 has been sold 110.4 million times so far. However, it still lags behind the PlayStation 2, which is considered the best-selling gaming console of all time. It was released around 155 million times.
For the competition, the Xbox One, there have been no official figures for a long time. It is estimated that Microsoft has sold around 30 to 40 million versions of the Xbox One. However, this is not certain (via Seasond Gaming).
Why is the PS4 still so successful?
The reasons for the success of the PlayStation 4 are varied. When it was released on November 29, 2013, in Europe, Sony had the price advantage on its side: The PlayStation 4 cost about 100 euros less than the Xbox One. This is a point that is also being discussed again with the PS5.
Another reason is probably the exclusivity of many strong titles that are now available on the PlayStation 4.
