The PlayStation 5 is supposed to offer a modern sound feature with 3D audio. However, TV owners will have to wait. The technology will not be available on TVs at launch. Most headsets are expected to support the features.
What’s it about? Sony relies on an improved version of its existing 3D audio system used on PlayStation 4. Sony’s enhanced technology on PlayStation 5 is called 3D Tempest Audio. However, Sony has now explained in the official PlayStation Blog (in English) that the technology will not work on TVs:
We are currently working on virtual surround sound through speakers built into televisions. Although virtual surround sound through TV speakers will not be available on the day of PS5 release, it is still a feature we are very excited about, and our engineers are working hard to bring it to PS5 in the future.

However, Sony also stated that headphones and headsets will work with 3D audio on PS5. “You can use 3D audio with the headphones that many of you already have, either through a USB connection to the console or by plugging your headphones into the 3.5mm headphone jack of the DualSense Wireless Controller.”
Both old headsets and headphones that you already own or are looking to buy should be compatible with the new technology.
Recommended gaming headsets on Amazon: The following headsets support both the PS4 and the upcoming PlayStation 5. We have selected three devices for you:
- The Corsair HS60 Pro is a solid headset made of high-quality materials with very good microphone quality. On PC, you can also use Corsair’s iCUe software for sound adjustment. The sound is decent and balanced, but nothing special.
- The Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 2 offers very good audio and voice quality and decent battery life in wireless mode. However, the ear cups fit quite snugly and may not be to everyone’s taste.
- The Sony PlayStation 4 Platinum Headset already supports 3D audio on the PlayStation 4, fits very comfortably on the ears, and provides good sound quality. However, the microphone is not that great. The additional companion app feels a bit tacked on.

PS5 and 3D Tempest Audio – what’s behind it
What exactly is 3D audio? According to Sony, 3D audio allows individual sounds to be precisely placed in a virtual space. However, object-based audio formats have existed for a while with Dolby Atmos and are not an invention of Sony.
The advantage of this system is that the audio does not come as a package, like with multiple channels. Instead, individual sounds can be positioned accurately.
During playback of the sound data, special software processes the sound. The headset or speakers receive calculations from the software regarding how loud certain sounds should be or how they should be played back.
Sony’s console is currently sold out everywhere, but there could very well be a 3rd wave for pre-orders coming soon.
