The PS5 and Xbox Series X are said to have very fast storage. A developer now says it is “too small”, as new games are getting increasingly larger.
Who is speaking? The developer in question is Thomas Mahler. He is the Game Director at Moon Studios. The studio is known for its two platforming games “Ori and the Blind Forest” and “Ori and the Will of the Wisps”.
Where do the information come from? On resetera, Mahler commented on the new SSD of the new consoles. He explained that one particular thing bothers him, and that is the size of the SSD. He writes:
By the way, one thing that will annoy us all is that 1 TB is simply too small these days, so prepare for much more cleanup, at least until new console iterations with larger SSDs appear. The latest Call of Duty is about 170 GB… So I doubt you’ll be able to have more than 10-15 games or so simultaneously on your console. Meh.

Even though the storage space appears limited at 1 TB, both Sony and Microsoft have presented solutions in case the SSD of the PS5 or Xbox Series X should fill up.
If you are still gaming on a conventional HDD on your PlayStation 4, we will tell you which SSDs are worth it for the PS4. We will also give you tips on how to install the SSD into the console:
PS5 and Xbox Series X: 1TB SSD already too small
This is why new games are very large: Microsoft and Sony both promise that both consoles can achieve at least 4K resolution.
- The architecture can process a particularly large amount of data simultaneously. This allows games to become larger.
- High-resolution graphics require space and the greater the demand for graphics, the more space is needed on the hard drive. And anyone who has ever downloaded high-resolution HD textures for a game knows the problem.
Some games become larger over time: Many games, especially online games, regularly offer updates that provide new content. However, these updates don’t necessarily have to be small.
Games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare regularly throw huge updates at you:
- With the January update of Call of Duty, you reached nearly 30 GB in download size.
- And the CoD update for Season 2 was between 50 GB and 68 GB in size, depending on whether you are playing on PC or console.
And here lies the problem according to Mahler: If games like Call of Duty are already around 170 GB, then there isn’t much space left for many other games of similar size.

This is what the latest Call of Duty update offers: At least the updates for Call of Duty are not only huge, but also provide a lot of exciting content. The latest update delivers a survival mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone. This special “Free-for-All” mode has only been available in MW3 and Infinite Warfare until now and is now making its way into the latest installment of the series.
