A new expansion of the Pokémon trading card game will be released in May. MeinMMO author Paul Kutzner was already able to take an exclusive look at the set.
The next expansion of the Pokémon trading cards from the main series, Mega Evolutions, will be released on May 22, 2026. This expansion is called “Growing Chaos” and, as usual, brings many new cards. The big star of the new expansion is Mega-Kyurem-EX.
Although the expansion has not been released yet, I already got a look at some of the new cards. And not just for me; they have also excited my girlfriend. We have a tradition when I receive new Pokémon cards, even though she doesn’t really care much for Pokémon.
Every card is special
Every time I get new cards, we have a fixed ritual. I do not open the cards until my girlfriend is there. Instead, we sit together at our table and split all the boosters into 2 piles. Care is taken to ensure that everyone, if possible, has not only the same number of boosters but also the same cover monsters.
For my preview test of the expansion, I received a Top Trainer Box. First, we opened the box and looked at all the extras that come in such boxes: the promo card, the coin, the dice, the card dividers, and the card sleeves. In addition, a TTB contains 9 boosters, 40 energy cards, and a code card for the Pokémon Trading Card Game Live.

The promo card of the new expansion is a beautiful full-art variant of Fynx. Both of us were immediately taken with the card.
After reviewing the promo card and the additional extras, it was time to focus on the boosters. With the 9 boosters from the Top Trainer Box, we had a lot to do. After all, there were many cards that needed to be freed from their boosters, examined, and placed in sleeves.

And now we could conduct our ritual again: All packs were divided into 2 piles and were opened alternately by us. We open each booster pack one by one and never simultaneously. In each pack, we calmly look at each individual card piece by piece before moving on to the next.
It’s not just the so-called “hits” like full-art cards that are special to us. There are so many interesting cards that impress with their lovely Pokémon artwork, funny attack names, or abilities and effects that can be very entertaining in battles.
We drew some cards again that particularly captivated us.

It is especially nice to share this joy with my girlfriend, even though she doesn’t care much for Pokémon. She can’t relate to the anime or the games for consoles and smartphones. Nonetheless, she shares my joy in being able to open new cards. This continually excites her, just as it did for me many years ago as a child when there were new boosters.
Some things never change and become even more beautiful when shared together. For us, this includes opening Pokémon cards.
In the past, I had the opportunity to test an expansion in advance. Of course, my girlfriend was involved in the process back then as well. We were so curious about the so-called Build & Battle Boxes that we had to test them directly in battles: After more than 20 hours in Pokémon TCG, the new expansion has fully captivated me again.
