In Pokémon GO you have had the opportunity to secure mysterious coins since the weekend. Now the reddit community is already hotly debating how this will continue. We at MeinMMO show you which three theories are highly regarded.
Which coins are we talking about? After the Community Day Classic with Dratini ended on Saturday, the PokéStops in the game gradually turned golden. If you spun one of these special stops, you could secure a new mysterious coin with a bit of luck. Meanwhile, you were pursued by a new Pokémon named Gierspenst.
Both, according to the information from Professor Willow and his friend, the biology teacher Jim, come from the Paldea region. While the first information about the new Pokémon has already been announced, there are still plenty of question marks about the new coins, especially regarding what they might be used for in the future.
This question has also been pondered by trainers in the reddit community, who have come up with various theories. We have summarized which ones they are below.
These 3 theories the trainers have about the golden coins
Many trainers in Pokémon GO have been primarily concerned with one question since Saturday: What will the new mysterious coins be used for in the game? This is also what the reddit user TheRealMrRogers wanted to know and asked the reddit community for corresponding theories.
And there are plenty of them. Among the multitude of ideas, however, three theories particularly stand out that seem plausible to many players.
Evolution item: Some trainers, like GeneralSecura, suspect that the mysterious coins represent an item that can be used to evolve Gierspenst. He writes on reddit: “A kind of evolution item for this mysterious coin Pokémon.”
A possible hint for this theory is that the coins are located in the item bag below the other evolution items. It is therefore conceivable that it is related to Gierspenst.
However, it is still not known whether the Pokémon has an evolution. It does possess two different forms: the wandering form, which you can currently see on the map, and a chest form. It is possible that the item could also be related to that.
In Pokémon GO, there are still several other evolution items. Here you can find out which monsters you should evolve with the Sinnoh Stone.
New Wonder Box: Another potential function for the coins that some players could envision is for them to work like the Wonder Box with Meltan, giving you the chance to catch the new Pokémon.
According to current information, this Pokémon is slated for release in the new Pokémon games “Pokémon Scarlet” and “Pokémon Violet” for the Nintendo Switch. Starting in 2023, it should also be catchable in Pokémon GO in its wandering form, which is currently accompanying you in the game.
Similar to Meltan, it is possible that you can connect with the respective games and, by activating the coins, obtain Gierspenst spawns for a certain period.
The reddit user CarPars could even imagine that you need 100 coins to activate a kind of chest. He writes (via reddit.com): “Maybe for a kind of exchange into a box like with Melmetal. For example, you can unlock a chest every 100 coins?”
Here you can find out how to activate the Meltan Box with Pokémon Home:
Level Up: In Pokémon GO, trainers and Pokémon can currently reach a maximum level of 50. To bring Pokémon from level 40 to level 50, you currently need a lot of XL candy.
Trainer Cholo-Warrior can therefore imagine that the coins are needed to level up further. He writes (via reddit.com): “They will announce that the level cap will be increased to 55. And you will need these in addition to the XL candy.”
Since Niantic introduced a new item for leveling up from level 40 to level 50 also with XL candy, this would also be conceivable in the event of a new level expansion.
Further theories about the mysterious coins
In the reddit comments, you can read plenty of other theories that trainers could envision in relation to the new coins, and they vary in seriousness.
These range from the idea of a cryptocurrency to connections with the actual coins in the game, up to the return of free remote raid passes (via reddit.com):
- ComplexityZX75: “It is a new cryptocurrency called ‘Confusion Coin’.”
- Tiki_the_voice: “If we collect enough globally, they will bring back the daily remote raid passes.”
- Da_Cow_: “Probably a way to turn a rare, non-tradable, non-shiny Pokémon into another without hope.”
- hys_rag3: “Hopefully a new way to get Pokecoins.”
- Beginning_Of-The_End: “When you reach 100 coins, you can exchange them for a PokéCoin for the shop.”
What function the new coins will actually have remains to be seen. As Niantic announced in the Pokémon GO blog, new information is expected in the next research report. However, it is still unknown when that will be.
Even though the golden stops have become somewhat rarer in the game, you can still secure one or another mysterious coin with a bit of luck and bridge the waiting time.
How do you like the new golden coins in Pokémon GO? Which of the theories could you envision? Or do you have a completely different assumption about what the coins might be about? Let us know here on MeinMMO in the comments and exchange ideas with other trainers on this topic.
