Some monsters in Pokémon GO can only be evolved with a so-called Unova Stone. We at MeinMMO show you which monsters require this evolution item, whether the evolution is worth it, and where you can actually obtain the item.
What are these evolutions? While most monsters in Pokémon GO can evolve using a certain amount of candies, there are a few exceptions. For example, Eevee can evolve using various tricks.
Some Pokémon also require a so-called evolution item. Currently, there are 7 different types of these items in the game: Unova Stone, Sinnoh Stone, Sun Stone, King’s Rock, Metal Coat, Dragon Scale, and Up-Grade.
However, you cannot use these items arbitrarily to evolve Pokémon, since the game specifies exactly which item must be used for each evolution. We have summarized which monsters you can evolve using an Unova Stone and whether the evolution is worth it below.

How did the ranking come about? In the following order of evolutions, we have based it on the numbers in the Pokédex. Whether the respective evolution is worth it has been summarized for you afterwards.

What is the Unova Stone? The Unova Stone is a special evolution item for selected Pokémon from Generation 5, that is from the Unova region. You can recognize the item by its white-black exterior.
How do you get the Unova Stone? Just like the other evolution items, the Unova Stone in Pokémon GO is not easy to obtain. You can secure it primarily through a research breakthrough. In rare cases, it can also be found among the rewards of special research during certain events.
Vegichita
What kind of Pokémon is this? Vegichita is the evolution of the grass-type Pokémon Vegimak. It comes from Generation 5 and belongs to the regional monsters in the game. You can find Vegimak outside of special events only in Asia and the Pacific region.
Is the evolution worth it? The small green monkey and its pre-evolution are not particularly strong, which is why they do not play a role in the GO Battle League or in raids. An evolution is therefore primarily worthwhile for registration in the Pokédex. To evolve Vegimak, you need 50 candies and an Unova Stone.
Grillchita
What kind of Pokémon is this? The evolution of Grillmak is the fire-type Pokémon Grillchita. Just like Vegichita, it comes from Generation 5 and is a regional Pokémon. Grillmak spawns primarily in Europe, Africa, India, and the Middle East, which is why you will encounter it occasionally in the game.
Is the evolution worth it? Grillmak and Grillchita also have rather weak stats, which is why they are rarely used in raids and PvP battles. Similar to Vegichita, an evolution here is primarily worthwhile for completing the Pokédex. You also need 50 candies and an Unova Stone for this.
Sodachita
What kind of Pokémon is this? The third regional monkey Pokémon in this group is Sodachita. The pre-evolution of the water-type Pokémon, Sodamak, is typically found only in America and Greenland.
Is the evolution worth it? Sodachita can also struggle in the GO Battle League and in raids due to its lower stats. For this reason, it is also primarily suitable for the Pokédex. Just like with Vegimak and Grillmak, you need 50 candies and an Unova Stone to evolve Sodamak.
Somnivora
What kind of Pokémon is this? Somnivora is the evolution of Somniam. This psychic-type Pokémon from Generation 5 can be found in the wild worldwide and mainly spawns in windy weather.
Is the evolution worth it? Unlike Vegichita, Grillchita, and Sodachita, Somnivora can score with good stamina. However, its attack and defense stats are not sufficient for it to be interesting for use in raids or the GO Battle League. Thus, you should also primarily use the 50 candies and the Unova Stone for registration in the Pokédex.
Chillabell
What kind of Pokémon is this? The normal-type Pokémon Chillabell is the evolution of Picochilla and also comes from Generation 5. You can find the small mouse particularly in the wild during partial cloudiness.
Is the evolution worth it? Both Picochilla and Chillabell are not particularly strong. For this reason, Chillabell is also not among the best attackers in Pokémon GO and can hardly convince in the GO Battle League, which is why you should mainly evolve it for the entry in the Pokédex. Again, you will need 50 candies and an Unova Stone for the evolution.
Zapplarang
What kind of Pokémon is this? Zapplarang is the final evolution of Zapplardin. This Pokémon from Generation 5 belongs to the Electric type. Zapplardin primarily spawns in the wild during rain but can also occasionally be obtained from eggs.
Is the evolution worth it? Both Zapplarang and its two pre-evolutions Zapplalek and Zapplardin are rather less interesting for use in raids and the GO Battle League. Therefore, they are also developments that could primarily be important for completing your Pokédex.
To evolve Zapplardin to Zapplalek, you only need 25 candies. For the evolution from Zapplalek to Zapplarang, you must use a further 100 candies and an Unova Stone.
Skelabra
What kind of Pokémon is this? Skelabra is the final evolution of Lichtel, a ghost and fire Pokémon. You can find it occasionally in the wild, but also in research tasks and occasionally as a reward in the GO Battle League.
Is the evolution worth it? Unlike the other evolutions with the Unova Stone, Skelabra can score with its high attack value and solid stamina and defense values. With a moveset of Fire Spin and Overheat, it belongs to the best fire attackers in Pokémon GO.
And as a strong ghost attacker, it can also perform well in raids. In the GO Battle League, however, there are better candidates. With the help of 25 candies, you can evolve Lichtel to Laternecto and with another 100 candies and an Unova Stone, Laternecto to Skelabra.
Conclusion on the evolutions with Unova Stone
With the exception of Skelabra, the remaining evolutions with the Unova Stone are not particularly strong and hardly find use in raids and PvP battles. For this reason, you should primarily use your Unova Stones for evolving Skelabra.
The Pokémon is among the top attackers of both fire and ghost types, which is why it’s also worth having one or two strong examples in your team. If you still have Unova Stones left, you can also use them to complete your Pokédex.
