In Pokémon GO trainers have had the chance to use a valuable Master Ball for catching for a few months now. However, a player used it in a completely useless moment and is allowed to keep the ball nonetheless. What exactly happened we have summarized for you here on MeinMMO.
Which ball is it about? The probably most valuable and coveted ball in Pokémon GO is the Master Ball. If you use it, it guarantees your catch. Through an animation, the ball is thrown automatically, which is why you cannot discard it.
But there is a catch, as you currently have only one single Master Ball available. Once it is used, it is gone, so you should think carefully about its use. Or maybe not? A trainer was able to keep the ball after his catch. What happened there and what the community suspects, we show you below.
Trainer uses Master Ball for Zygarde
What did the trainer catch? As Reddit user TAMEFAZ69 shows in his post, he used his Master Ball to catch a Zygarde. But the surprising part is not the catch itself, but the fact that he still carries his Master Ball in his item bag afterwards.
He writes (via reddit.com): Um… How can I still have a Master Ball? I caught a Zygarde with a Master Ball yesterday… But I still have one… How is that?
Trainers puzzled over existing Master Ball
How can this be? Initially, there is astonishment in the Reddit community about how this can be. Some trainers suspect a glitch behind the display, or believe that TAMEFAZ69 simply got lucky and is allowed to keep the ball due to a game bug.
Trainers have the craziest ideas about how this could have happened. For instance, Reddit user hibernating-hobo jokingly suspects that the dog (Zygarde) might have brought the ball back (via reddit.com).
Special research secures ball: However, the answer could be quite different. Zygarde is a legendary Pokémon that you can currently only obtain through the special research From A to Zygarde
. However, no use of a Master Ball is actually necessary here because monsters obtained from research cannot flee.
The game should also not burden your item bag. You can throw balls at these monsters as long as they finally stay in the ball. And that is what some trainers also suspect as the background for the still existing Master Ball. So in the comments, one can read the following (via reddit.com):

You were lucky that a special research does not consume inventory… so you don’t have to use it for a special research Pokémon or a legendary shiny raid boss because they cannot flee.

I don’t think PokéBalls are used up when you have a special research encounter, I think that applies to Master Balls too.

For TAMEFAZ69, that was a decent stroke of luck that he didn’t waste his Master Ball on a monster from a research encounter. He can hopefully use his second chance more wisely now.
