A trainer wanted to take advantage of an event in Pokémon GO and refrained from playing properly for days. However, a mistake ruined his plan. We from MeinMMO explain to you what exactly happened and what important change he is now demanding from the developers.
Which event is it about? On Sunday, April 28, 2024, the Hatching Day with Pii took place in Pokémon GO. For this event, trainers could encounter the baby Pokémon of the fairy type from the 2 km eggs they received during the event, and even obtain it with a higher chance of being shiny. In addition, there was a shortened hatching distance for all eggs.
Many did not want to miss this event and made preparations days in advance to secure as many eggs as possible during Hatching Day. This also included Reddit user 08-Jacob, who largely refrained from playing for days. However, a mistake ruined it for him. Therefore, he is now demanding an important change. We show you what it is.
Trainer demands blocking feature for eggs
What mistake did he make? As Reddit user 08-Jacob explains in his post, he largely refrained from Pokémon GO in the two days before Hatching Day and did not turn any PokéStops, among other things. The reason for this was his empty egg slots, which he wanted to save for the event with Pii.
However, before the event started, he made a mistake. He fought against one of the Rocket bosses and subsequently received a 12 km egg. As he explains in his post, he did not know that eggs could also come from that.
This mistake, however, was not the only one. Due to a moment of inattention, he lost another egg slot by accidentally opening a friend’s gift while sending gifts. From this, he received a 7 km egg. He vented his frustration on Reddit and is now calling for an urgent change in the game.
What change is he demanding? After consciously limiting himself while playing to avoid getting new eggs and then being “punished” by two mistakes with high eggs, 08-Jacob is now demanding an important change in the game. He believes there should be an option where players can set whether they want to receive new eggs or not.
This way, players would not have to restrict themselves when playing and could still participate in hatching events without problems. He explains on Reddit:
After 1.5 days of “unnatural” playing, during which I avoided spinning stops and hardly caught anything because I wanted to hatch the eggs before Hatching Day, I accidentally fought a Rocket boss without knowing it would give me an egg. Later, I also accidentally opened a gift while sending gifts.
These two “accidents” and the restrictions on playing during those days have led me to conclude that it is long overdue for Niantic to activate a function similar to “opening gifts while the item bag is full” to block receiving all types of eggs in the settings that can be toggled on and off as desired.
Why are eggs a problem? In Pokémon GO, there are different eggs that can be obtained in various ways. They primarily differ in the distance that must be covered to hatch them, but also by their contents. While 12 km eggs can only be obtained from Team Rocket and 7 km eggs from gifts, the 2, 5, and 10 km eggs are randomly found at PokéStops and Gyms.
However, since each player only has 9 regular egg slots and the 3 additional spots can only be used for special eggs from Adventure Sync or Team Rocket provided the other slots are already filled, the spaces are severely limited. Furthermore, unlike most other contents in the game, eggs cannot be deleted.
The only way to remove eggs is to hatch them. However, there is also a difficulty here, as each trainer only has one free, infinite incubator. Anyone wanting to hatch more than one egg at the same time has to purchase more using PokéCoins. This is particularly annoying and frustrating during special hatching events or with poor egg contents.
How do trainers react to the demand?
Trainers demand a delete function: In the Reddit community, trainers can understand 08-Jacob’s frustration. For many years, players have criticized the handling of eggs. While other contents, like Pokémon or items, can be deleted, this is not the case with eggs. To get rid of unwanted eggs, one can only hatch them.
Furthermore, the nature of Hatching Days significantly differs from other events. Since it primarily revolves around hatching event eggs, players need adequate space to even obtain them. Therefore, anyone with old eggs in their bag must first hatch these, which takes time.
For this reason, many players agree with 08-Jacob’s suggestion and wish for a new feature. However, they would preferably like to be able to simply delete eggs. But some are open to the suggestion of a blocking feature as an alternative. Thus, one can read the following in the Reddit comments:
- AbsolTamerCody:
Yes. Exactly that. Because as long as eggs cannot be deleted (as a side effect, it would be easier to get 10 km eggs), a lock for the egg bag would be perfect.
- krispyboiz:
This shows how Hatching Days differ from other days. On Community Days, you can usually just start playing. On Research Days, you need to be near PokéStops, but then you can start. On Raid Days, you have to be near gyms and sometimes around other people, but you can choose when to start. You can’t really start playing on a Hatching Day if you are full of eggs. The event has some weaknesses.
- tokyoedo:
I just wish you could delete eggs. Or at least use them for an omelet.
Trainers do not believe in implementation: However, the implementation of a delete or blocking function for eggs is not conceivable for everyone. Some trainers in the comments are convinced that Niantic profits from the sale of incubators by not having such a function, which is why they will not implement these options. For example, shadraig writes in the comments:
Do you not understand the psychology behind all of this?
a) they force us to clean up the eggs (here they can earn coins because people might want to buy one or two more incubators)
b) they count on us accidentally opening a gift with fat fingers, and then we have to clean up the eggs again (here they can earn coins because people might want to buy one or two more incubators)
c) they let us walk a few miles on a weekend day [for the event] (here they can earn coins because people might want to buy one or two more incubators)
Niantic will never let us delete eggs
Niantic will never give us a switch to toggle egg reception on and off.
Whether there will perhaps still be a change regarding eggs remains to be seen. Should there be new information on this, you will find it at MeinMMO.
