That’s why you should get the mystery box: Shiny Meltan has only been available in one event so far. This event has been running for over a month, but ends tomorrow morning. So if you don’t have a Shiny yet, you should secure a box again.
When does the event end? Today, on March 4th, the event ends according to the official announcement at 11:59 PM PST. This is 8:59 AM tomorrow morning (March 5th) in Germany. If you don’t have time for Pokémon GO at that time, you should pick up a mystery box today.
That’s why Shiny Meltan will disappear for now
This is what Niantic says: In the announcement for the event, it is stated that you can only catch the Shiny during this limited time. After that, it will disappear for now.
Will it come back? Surely Shiny Meltan will return to the game, but a date is not known. If Meltan is handled like Shinys of legendary Pokémon, it may take some time. After all, Meltan is a mysterious Pokémon which can certainly be compared to legendary Pokémon.
How likely is Shiny Meltan? If you have picked up a Meltan box every 3rd day, then based purely on probability, you should have encountered at least one Shiny. The Shiny rate is about 1 in 40.
How to get Meltan: If you haven’t gotten a mystery box yet, you should visit a friend with a Nintendo Switch and one of the Let’s GO games.
When you send a Pokémon to the game, you will receive a mystery box in return. This box then holds around 20 Meltan for you.
