What kind of event is this? Every Tuesday, a Spotlight Hour takes place in Pokémon GO. For 60 minutes, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, bonuses are active. One affects the appearance of a specified Pokémon species, the other affects XP, stardust, or candies.
Today during the Spotlight Hour, you will encounter Alolan Sandshrew and receive extra experience points.
Spotlight Hour on January 3rd – Start, Bonuses, Shiny
When does it start? The Spotlight Hour begins today at the usual time of 6:00 PM local time. The event is active for one hour and ends at 7:00 PM.
What bonuses are there? During the event, you will encounter Alolan Sandshrew very frequently in the wild. If you want to increase the encounters, you can activate incense.
As an additional bonus, you will receive double experience points for evolving Pokémon.

Can you catch Shiny Alolan Sandshrew? Yes, the shiny version of the Alolan form of Sandshrew is already active in Pokémon GO. If you are lucky, you might catch one during the Spotlight Hour. However, the chances of that are not increased during the event.
Is the Spotlight Hour worth it today? The event is primarily worth it today if you want to take advantage of the evolution bonus and collect a lot of experience points. Alolan Sandshrew is frequently present at events in Pokémon GO and is therefore no longer a special catch.
