A new face will soon appear in Pokémon GO: Mateo will arrive in a few days and bring gifts. You just have to find him.
Who is that? Mateo is a new NPC you will soon encounter in Pokémon GO. The researcher can appear at the end of routes starting December 4, 2023, when you complete them.
What does Mateo do?If you meet Mateo at the end of a route, you can perform a “gift exchange” with him.
That means:
- You give Mateo one of your gifts that you found at the start or end of the route or at a nearby PokéStop
- Then you select “Exchange”: Now you receive a gift from another trainer from Mateo
You also need to do this in the new special research “Route to New Friendships”.

Why should I talk to Mateo in Pokémon GO? Basically, this is another bonus you should simply take at the end of routes. Above all, however, he gives you the chance to receive postcards from trainers you don’t have on your friends list.
At best, these are postcards from regions you haven’t noted in your postcard book yet – and that, in turn, brings you closer to the different forms of Vivillon.

Event “Along the Routes” welcomes Mateo in Pokémon GO
What kind of event is this? The event starts on December 5, 2023, at 10:00 AM and ends on Friday, December 8, at 8:00 PM.
It begins a day after Mateo’s debut and focuses on the new NPC. The event will bring a special research that introduces the character closer and also tells more about the gift exchange. It will be exciting to see what bonuses Mateo will bring.
Furthermore, Niantic points out in the announcement that you can now also connect the party play feature with routes to complete them together.
What else does the event bring? “Along the Routes” will rotate around the spawn pool in the wild and also bring other Pokémon in the 7 km eggs. Among other things, the shiny variant of Hisui-Sniebel will be available for the first time, which can appear in the eggs but also in field research if you are lucky.
Additionally, there will be a limited research, suitable showcases, and some bonuses. These are:
- Double hatch speed for eggs
- Fivefold XP for first-time spinning a new PokéStop
- Triple XP for spinning PokéStops
- Double stardust when opening gifts
