I have personally completed a total of 23 routes, two different tracks, I did the restart trick, the trick of stopping and ending the route, and going back, and still, no Z cells have appeared for me. My partner did all these routes with me on her phone and got exactly the same results. For some of us, the route function is more than faulty.
More tips: Some players also give additional hints about the cells in the comments. For example, Birphon recommends that before starting the route, one should catch all Pokémon in the area, then activate the route and catch all monsters on the route.
Accordingly, a maximum of 3 so-called route spawns can appear, which you can recognize by the corresponding symbol above the monster. If you could catch 3 of these Pokémon, then there should be no cell on this route.
Other trainers also report that they were able to secure more than 3 cells per day. So that could motivate to complete a few more routes. However, one big question mark remains whether there are cells to be found on round routes where the start and end are the same.
Experiences with route submissions: Regarding route submissions, other trainers also share their experiences in the comments. They have also noticed that some routes appear immediately in the game while others take weeks to approve.
For this reason, some trainers suggest that it may not depend on the number of routes, but their location. As seen in the comments (via reddit.com):

I had a similar experience during my vacation in a remote mountain area, there were 0 routes and only two gyms nearby. I created 3 routes and all were available immediately after creation. (I was basically able to walk in one direction, submit the route, and follow my own route back)

I received 2 instant approvals in a city where there are routes, but they are a bit further away. I would estimate it’s about a mile away in a straight line from the nearest one. The way Niantic analyzes its map, I suspect that an S2 cell is in play, not a village boundary. Maybe S2 level 11? Just a guess based on the routes I know.

I wasn’t aware that some routes don’t spawn cells. I thought that if a route gives a cell, it would always do so. It was frustrating when the routes, which were giving me cells, stopped doing so. I think I will try a few routes before I give up.

I wasn’t aware that some routes don’t spawn cells. I thought that if a route gives a cell, it would always do so. It was frustrating when the routes, which were giving me cells, stopped doing so. I think I will try a few routes before I give up.
- Odd-Substance9040:
- SnackOnMe:
I had a similar experience during my vacation in a remote mountain area, there were 0 routes and only two gyms nearby. I created 3 routes and all were available immediately after creation. (I was basically able to walk in one direction, submit the route, and follow my own route back)
- stevewmn:
I received 2 instant approvals in a city where there are routes, but they are a bit further away. I would estimate it’s about a mile away in a straight line from the nearest one. The way Niantic analyzes its map, I suspect that an S2 cell is in play, not a village boundary. Maybe S2 level 11? Just a guess based on the routes I know.

- Odd-Substance9040:

In Pokémon GO, the Zygarde cells drive trainers to despair. Now, one player shows how he reached the 50% form in just 17 days and explains how he managed it. We at MeinMMO have summarized his tips for you and show the reactions of the community.
Which cells are we talking about? Since the end of July, there has been a new route feature in Pokémon GO, where you can encounter so-called Zygarde cells. However, many trainers are still having great difficulties more than 6 weeks after the release.
While some still have no routes at all, others are despairing over the Zygarde cells because they simply do not appear. A Reddit user has now achieved a first milestone and managed to secure the 50% form of Zygarde within 17 days. How he did this is summarized for you below.
Trainer explains how he found 50 Zygarde cells
What did the player achieve? Like most other trainers, the Reddit user EmreSwiss1987 set out to search for the Zygarde cells. And he succeeded, as he reports in his post.
He was initially delayed in starting his search for the special cells due to the lack of routes but managed to reach a significant milestone in a short time. So, within 17 days, he was able to secure enough Zygarde cells to transform the legendary Pokémon into its 50% form. With his experiences, he now wants to help other trainers.
He writes (via reddit.com):
I wanted to share my experience on how I got 50 Zygarde cells in the shortest time, i.e., in 17 days, collecting 3 cells each day. I wasn’t able to play routes right after the release of Zygarde, but once I was able to access routes, it went pretty quickly.
I know that probably most of the information is already known, but here is my experience, maybe it’s helpful for some.
How did he do it? According to EmreSwiss1987, he walked several routes daily for 17 days until he found 3 cells each time. In the further course of the post, he summarizes his experiences around the Zygarde cells to help other players (via reddit.com):
- He was able to collect a maximum of 3 cells per day; after that, no more would appear.
- On most routes, he could secure only one cell, and on one route, even 2.
- A route counts as the same track even if you walk it in the opposite direction or a second time on the same day. It thus does not yield further cells.
- The majority of his cells appeared in the last 100 meters.
- 80% of the cells could only be seen by restarting the game.
- Not every route spawns cells daily.
He also noted that the approval of his submitted routes in areas where there were already routes took longer than in areas without routes.
How does the community react to the tips about the cells?
Frustration among other trainers: Although other trainers have already given these tips and been successful, there is one prevailing sentiment in the community: frustration. Many have been trying to find the Zygarde cells for weeks and regularly walk routes, but without success. Even with the tips, they are simply unable to achieve it.
It seems that the game is still buggy in many places, as general problems with routes are repeatedly mentioned. Nevertheless, players are grateful for all tips. Here’s what they write in the comments (via reddit.com):

Experiences with route submissions: Regarding route submissions, other trainers also share their experiences in the comments. They have also noticed that some routes appear immediately in the game while others take weeks to approve.
For this reason, some trainers suggest that it may not depend on the number of routes, but their location. As seen in the comments (via reddit.com):

I had a similar experience during my vacation in a remote mountain area, there were 0 routes and only two gyms nearby. I created 3 routes and all were available immediately after creation. (I was basically able to walk in one direction, submit the route, and follow my own route back)
- stevewmn:
I received 2 instant approvals in a city where there are routes, but they are a bit further away. I would estimate it’s about a mile away in a straight line from the nearest one. The way Niantic analyzes its map, I suspect that an S2 cell is in play, not a village boundary. Maybe S2 level 11? Just a guess based on the routes I know.
What are your experiences with the Zygarde cells? Have you been able to secure the 50% form of the legendary monster as well? Or are you also struggling with issues in the game? Let us know here at MeinMMO in the comments.
You can secure the legendary Pokémon independently of the cells in a research task. We show you all tasks and rewards for the special research From A to Zygarde

I am having problems getting cells… I try the same route every day. In the five times I completed it, I only got a cell one of those times… I even tried to close the app and pause before the end and then go towards the end of the route…
- medellia44:
It’s a shame that the last update has completely ruined the route function for me. The game completely freezes when I even try to open this tab.
- OutRagousGameR:
I wasn’t aware that some routes don’t spawn cells. I thought that if a route gives a cell, it would always do so. It was frustrating when the routes, which were giving me cells, stopped doing so. I think I will try a few routes before I give up.
- Odd-Substance9040:
I have personally completed a total of 23 routes, two different tracks, I did the restart trick, the trick of stopping and ending the route, and going back, and still, no Z cells have appeared for me. My partner did all these routes with me on her phone and got exactly the same results. For some of us, the route function is more than faulty.
More tips: Some players also give additional hints about the cells in the comments. For example, Birphon recommends that before starting the route, one should catch all Pokémon in the area, then activate the route and catch all monsters on the route.
