The big Rocket takeover in Pokémon GO is currently determining the game. You encounter Rocket Grunts and their bosses at every turn:
- Cliff
- Arlo
- Sierra
- Giovanni
The bosses have received new Pokémon as part of the event with which they challenge you. This also means that they have new rewards. And the best one is carried by Cliff.

How do I get Crypto-Kaumalat and what makes it so good?
Here’s how to catch Crypto-Kaumalat: The little dragon is part of Cliff’s lineup, so you need to defeat the Rocket Boss to get it. Here’s what you need to do:
- Defeat Rocket Grunts until you receive a Rocket Radar from the mysterious parts from the battles
- Use the radar to track down the Rocket Bosses
- Click on the corresponding stops or balloons to challenge the boss. If you’re lucky, it’s Cliff. If Sierra or Arlo show up, keep searching.
The fight against Cliff: Unlike Grunts, the bosses actually use shields and are therefore a little bit harder to beat. But: With the right Pokémon, they aren’t a problem either.
Against Cliff, we particularly recommend Fairy-type Pokémon, as they are effective against many of his possible Pokémon. You can find a more detailed list in our counter guide against Rocket Boss Cliff. But options like Togekiss, Primarina, or Gardevoir take him down quickly.
What makes Crypto-Kaumalat so strong? Essentially, Crypto-Pokémon have 20% more attack power than their normal variants. They take less damage, but in raids, the high attack value is more important. It’s crucial that you remove the move “Frustration” from Crypto-Kaumalat during the Rocket event by using a Charge TM – because after the event, you can only get rid of the useless move through purification. And then Kaumalat loses its Crypto status.
Kaumalat is special in that it evolves into Knakrack – and this is generally one of the best Pokémon you can use in Pokémon GO as a raid attacker. If you have a Knakrack with the Crypto bonus, it is one of the absolute top attackers in the game.
Additionally, Knakrack has the option to evolve into Mega-Knakrack if you have the necessary Mega Energy. However, this can only be done with Pokémon that do not have a Crypto status. So if you want to use your Crypto-Knakrack as Mega-Knakrack, you would need to purify one of your Cryptos. But: At least you can ensure that you get good stats there.
Crypto-Kaumalat could be obtained earlier, but it was only found with the rare dragon Rocket Grunt. With Cliff, you now have a reliable way to get the Pokémon. And: The shiny chance is also slightly increased with the Rocket bosses. Therefore, it’s worth challenging Cliff a few times.
