What do you need balls for? To catch the monsters in Pokémon GO, you need balls. Especially for participating in events, it is advisable to stock up on them in advance.
But how do you actually get balls? Below, we have listed 9 ways and explain what you need to pay attention to in each case:

How do the balls in Pokémon GO differ? In Pokémon GO, there are a total of 3 different types of balls: Poké Balls, Great Balls, and Ultra Balls. They differ not only visually but also in their function.
- Poké Balls: The red and white Poké Balls are available to you from the beginning and are especially suitable for weaker Pokémon with low CP, as they rarely escape from the ball.
- Great Balls: You can recognize the Great Balls by their blue and white appearance and the two red stripes. This ball becomes available to you from level 12 and increases your chances of catching a monster.
- Ultra Balls: The white and yellow balls with black stripes further increase your catch chances. They are particularly suitable for monsters that display a red circle when being caught. You can use them starting from level 20.
1. Spinning PokéStops and Gyms
The simplest way to stock up on your ball supply is to spin the photo disc at PokéStops and Gyms. This can be activated approximately every 5 minutes and rewards you with numerous items. These include balls as well as revives, potions, and berries.
So, it’s best to consider a route in advance that includes as many PokéStops and Gyms as possible and head outside. If you don’t want to look at your phone all the time, you can use some gadgets like the GO Plus or Poké Ball Plus to assist you.
You can easily connect these devices to your smartphone and link them to the game. While you’re out, the device can easily spin each photo disc for you, allowing you to collect the precious balls.

To get even more items, you can also use the Power-Up function at PokéStops and Gyms. To do this, the respective stop must be scanned. However, this is only possible starting from trainer level 20.
2. Opening gifts
Another way to get balls without even leaving your house is by opening gifts. You find these by clicking on your friends list. Usually, you can open up to 20 gifts per day, sometimes a few more during certain events.
What is actually in the gifts remains a matter of luck. From balls to berries, potions, revives, stickers, or eggs, everything is possible. The quantity of items also varies. However, if you urgently need balls, you should not overlook this option.

4. Completing research tasks
When collecting balls, research tasks can also be helpful. You can find special field research at PokéStops daily. Many of them unlock encounters with various Pokémon after solving them, but there are also tasks where you receive balls.
These include tasks like using 3 Power-Ups on Pokémon and are usually very simple and quick to solve. Collecting field research can also be excellently combined with your walk to spin the photo discs.
In addition to an AR task, you can keep a total of 3 other quests in your field view. If you want to spin for more tasks, you either need to solve these or delete an uninteresting research.

5. Leveling up

- 5 km: 20 Poké Balls
- 25 km: 20 Poké Balls and 10 Great Balls
- 50 km: 20 Poké Balls, 10 Great Balls, and 5 Ultra Balls

7. Free boxes

A non-free but very inexpensive alternative is the weekly event box. This costs 1 Poké Coin and includes besides a remote raid pass also berries and balls. It is available in your in-game shop every Monday and can be redeemed only once a week.
8. Promo codes and balloons
Occasionally, you can find special promo codes for Pokémon GO on the internet. These also give you various items such as balls or smoke. Sometimes you can even get avatar items.
