In Pokémon GO you can expect Shadow Raikou on Raid Day. We show you how to make the most of the day.
When does the Raid Day start? The Shadow Raid Day with Shadow Raikou starts on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 2:00 PM. It ends three hours later at 5:00 PM.
The special thing about this period: Shadow Raikou appears at numerous gyms and can be challenged by you. The monster has an increased shiny chance. At the same time, the current Team Rocket takeover continues.
But how can you best make use of the day? We summarize it for you here.
How do I defeat Shadow Raikou? Counters against the boss
The legendary Electric-type Pokémon is particularly susceptible to Ground attacks. So these are the moves you need. Accordingly, you should use the top Ground-type attackers. Examples include:
- Primal Groudon
- Groudon
- Mega Garchomp
- Garchomp
- Landorus
- Excadrill
- Gliscor
- Rhyperior
It is crucial that you use Ground attacks with these monsters as well. Keep in mind that you can deal more damage with the Shadow versions of the Pokémon.
Note: The battle against Shadow Raikou is not easy. You will likely need at least four trainers with strong counters.
Remove Frustration from Shadow Raikou
Once you have caught your Shadow Raikou, immediately remove the move Frustration using a Charged TM. This move can only be removed in this way during Team Rocket takeovers.
Removing it is particularly worthwhile for Raikou, as with the move combination Thunder Shock and Charge Beam, Shadow Raikou is among the absolute top Electric-type attackers. So don’t miss this opportunity.
Use all available Raid Passes on Raid Day
You can receive up to 5 additional free Raid Passes during the event. The key is that you will only receive the next one after the last one has been used up.
This means: Stay on the move. Follow these steps:
- Choose a gym, get your first free pass
- Finish the raid against Shadow Raikou
- Catch the monster
- Immediately look for the next raid and get your next pass there
Keep in mind that you only have three hours. Depending on how many gyms are near you, you should plan your routes accordingly.
In Pokémon GO, it also continues to be exciting beyond Shadow Raikou. January is coming to an end, February is approaching. And with the new month comes a new Pokémon into the game: Flaminkno will debut at the Carnival event. For all the details on how to catch Flaminkno, read here.
