The new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is currently causing issues for players on the PlayStation 5. The game crashes and reportedly renders the entire console unusable.
What is the problem? Some players on the PlayStation 5 report that they experience graphics issues while playing Cold War. This leads to the console crashing. While it can restart, none of the games, including Call of Duty, can be played afterwards.
In a large thread on Reddit with nearly 15,000 upvotes and also shared on Twitter and other social media channels, complaints are piling up. The issue is that it’s not just the console crashing but that the graphics unit is being affected.
This makes the console effectively unusable, as no games can be played on it anymore. This is particularly frustrating since only a few players have managed to obtain a PS5. Many are still waiting for retailers to resume taking orders.
Meanwhile, the new Xbox Series X seems to be experiencing similar crash issues. In a thread on Reddit, people are already demanding their money back because Cold War is reportedly crashing frequently here as well.
When does it occur? Apparently, this specific issue only occurs when Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is launched. We at MeinMMO have already inquired with Sony and Activision about where the problem lies. According to Sony, there is no information available about the issue. Activision has not yet made an official comment.

How can I prevent this? As soon as you notice that there are graphics issues with Cold War, you should safely quit the game and not start it again until the next patch. This is what most affected players recommend.
Currently, there is no official solution for the problem. Users on Twitter and others are providing some tips on how to save your PlayStation 5 if you are affected by the bug:
- fully restart the console by holding the power button while the console is off
- reset the console to factory settings via the settings
- send your PlayStation 5 to customer service if you are already affected by the unusable GPU. You should receive a replacement in two weeks
When will a fix be available? A patch for Cold War is coming on December 8. While it is said to only bring “Quality of Life” improvements and to prepare the game for the Season 1 postponed to December 16, it is possible it will also address this serious issue.
