A group of players has founded a corporation in EVE Online with an unusual leader. They call themselves the first AI-controlled player company in the space MMORPG.
The use of Artificial Intelligence is spreading further and further. In many companies, tasks are gradually being transferred from humans to machines. That this is not always to our advantage is demonstrated by this example, where people lost their jobs because the AI now does their work.
A coalition of players in EVE Online remains completely unimpressed by such negative experiences. They place the fate of their corporation in the space MMORPG in the hands of ChatGPT. They believe this brings many advantages. However, a residual risk remains, just as in real life, when using AI.
ChatGPT as a Leader in EVE Online
What kind of company was founded in EVE Online? The organization Neural Nexus is a new coalition of players in EVE Online. They aim to let the AI ChatGPT decide on as many activities in the game as possible.
In this way, they want to ensure that disagreements or conflicts between a human leader and the members of the corporation are kept to a minimum. An even larger scam, where even the developers are asking for the reasons behind it, could be avoided this way.
At the same time, they want to use their resulting unique selling proposition in the space MMORPG to recruit additional members.
Does ChatGPT as a decision-maker have the final say? No, certain rules and guidelines provide the AI with a rough framework. In their codex, the founding members have written down some points that grant the human CEO of the player company more rights than the AI in case of doubt.
Thus, all matters outside of EVE Online are handled by the human managing director. Additionally, the CEO has the possibility to withdraw the AI’s responsibility for certain topics. Direct interaction with ChatGPT is also precisely defined. This way, decisions by the AI should always be made with regard to the principles laid out in the codex.
How does the collaboration between humans and machines work? Daily decisions are made by the members based on their own activities in the game. Consulting with the AI is also possible.
In so-called leadership activities, the leading council members independently make decisions in the interest of the AI. Here too, involving ChatGPT at any time is desirable. Very important decisions are coordinated monthly between leaders and the AI chief.
However, questionable decisions by ChatGPT should be scrutinized. The codex states, ‘Although AI is a powerful tool, members should remember that it is not infallible. Members should use their judgment when following the AI’s advice and consider the context of the game as well as the specific situation.’
This is intended to prevent ‘evil’ decisions by the AI. This stands in contrast to the possibility for human players, who with the release of the Havoc expansion can now also be evil.
Which tasks have already been taken over by AI? In the area of member applications, AI has already become an indispensable part of the application process.
A mix of questions from leadership players and ChatGPT are supposed to assess the potential of a possible new member.
After a two-week trial period for a candidate, the AI is questioned again. Based on additional information from this period, ChatGPT then decides on an acceptance or rejection for the applicant.
Other tasks of the AI include the creation of the company’s logo and drafting a welcome message for newcomers. Naming spaceships is also part of their activities.
