Elden Ring provides its players with a wide array of tools that can be used in battle to survive. However, some of these tools are considered by parts of the community to be “Easy Mode” and are looked down upon.
In the action RPG Elden Ring, players can experiment with various builds and shape their gameplay to suit their preferences. In addition to melee builds, which use swords, spears, sabers, clubs, and similar weapons, there is also a large variety of magic available.
And this magic is currently a point of contention within the community.
What’s being discussed: Elden Ring has been on the market for a little over a week, and there are now countless clips and videos showing players getting properly beaten up or referring to every animal in the game as a dog.
However, there have also been clips showing magic users easily handling supposedly tough bosses. They simply keep their distance and bombard their rather slow opponents with spells, as seen with one of the first bosses encountered in an optional dungeon:
In comments and reactions to such videos, it is often said that magic in Elden Ring is too overpowered. It makes the boss fights, which are supposed to be challenging and difficult, far too easy. People believe the game should be played “properly” by engaging in melee combat, learning the attack patterns of the bosses, and earning the victory.
- “The guy is talking nonsense and defeats the boss by spamming magic.”
- “He uses magic and projectiles and acts like he achieved something. Try melee and let’s see who complains.”
- “Talking nonsense while staying at a distance with magic lmao ok”
Melee builds are considered by part of the player base to be the “real” Elden Ring experience because fights with them are often more demanding.
Strategies that make boss fights easier are therefore seen as “not right” or “Easy Mode”. Even though the tools for these strategies were implemented by the developers in the game.
The counterargument: The complaints about magic users in Elden Ring have sparked heated discussions on social media. Accordingly, there were strong reactions to the statements that magic is “cheating”.
Another part of the community countered that everyone should be able to play Elden Ring however they want. The developers did not implement magic for no reason and made it much more diverse than in previous SoulsBorne games. Therefore, it is indeed fair and okay to use it.
It was also pointed out that in the past there have been bosses and enemies that had strong resistances to magic or individual elements. Therefore, the magic users do not always have it completely easy, according to this part of the community.
Additionally, magic users have to split their potions between healing and SP regeneration, incurring further disadvantages.
Other players posted videos of their own mage builds, with which they had significant difficulties against very aggressive bosses. These bosses attack relentlessly and leave no time to effectively cast spells.
Therefore, magic is only overpowered in certain situations. Depending on the opponent, magic users sometimes have it even harder than players who rely on strength builds and stroll through the game with great swords and heavy armor.
