In Pokémon GO it is said that there is a trick to exchange wild shiny monsters and thus obtain even rarer specimens. A video proof now shows this.
For many trainers, the great appeal lies not only in catching all Pokémon but also in immortalizing every specimen as shiny in their collection.
However, the differently colored monsters are really rare. One player risked his shiny to prove an absurd-sounding experiment. In doing so, he essentially confirmed a trick with which you can “exchange” wild shinies.
This is what the experiment is about: In the well-known subreddit for PoGo “TheSilphRoad,” user Shetep shared this discovery:
- During the spotlight hour on March 9, Reddit user Shetep encountered a shiny Traumato. The weekly mini-event revolved around this psychic monster.
- Instead of catching the rare pink version of Traumato, the trainer waited until the event ended at 7 PM.
- Immediately, the spawns changed as the spotlight hour was over. Where there had just been a shiny Traumato, now stood a Puppance.
- The new Puppance was also a shiny specimen, which Shetep quickly caught.

How does it work? Below the video, the shiny hunter explains the mechanics behind it in more detail. According to Shetep, this has happened to him three times now, with the first time being accidental. But the other two shiny swaps, or pocket maneuvers, he was able to initiate intentionally.
If you find one of the rare shinies, then the spawn itself is shiny. If an event ends and new Pokémon populate the spawn, the shiny status is essentially transferred.
This makes it possible to find a rarer shiny. By the way, instead of the Puppance, the trainer in the video was hoping for a Nasgnet – but he doesn’t want to complain.
The shiny chance varies from monster to monster but can even be 1 in 512. Due to this rarity and the sometimes cool color combinations (for example, a dark Charizard), shinies are highly sought after.
The first shiny Pokémon was, by the way, the often mocked Magikarp, which came into the game in 2017. Since then, new specimens are usually added gradually with events or community days.
This risk exists
However, according to Shetep, the new shiny is not guaranteed.
- It’s more like a coin toss, as some factors such as the different shiny rates for certain Pokémon also play a role.
- If you’re unlucky and a monster that has no shiny form takes the place of the first shiny, it is of course just a normal specimen.

- Others say that this was a very risky and daring maneuver. After all, the shiny Traumato would have been irretrievably wasted. Because even in the spotlight hour, the shiny chance is not increased; only the spawn of a monster.
- However, a few users doubt the trick and speak of simply an immense amount of luck in a row.
- But other trainers report that they have also been successful with the trick during the Kanto tour event.
